My 80 is a 300TD and it's not a turbo, either is my 86 Golf. To assume Turbo in those cases would be silly, the Turbo was an option on the 80 wagon and not even offered on the 86 Golf.

Do these use a coolant filter, or require frequent check of the pH like big trucks do?

We DO NOT refer to our 300TD wagons as 300TDT. Why, because it is incorrect. Please take note of your tail gate badge. Same with sedan folks. Their 300D sedans are not 300DT! Just because some secretary at Mercedes typed TDT on paperwork now and then isn't reason enough either. (some folks say it is typed that way on their paper work) I feel it is just the opposite of what you say. Since we KNOW these vehicles, we know that if somebody has an '81 wagon it is a turbo wagon, but if somebody has an '81 sedan it is a non-turbo. We know that if somebody has an '80 wagon it is a non-turbo (and may or may not smoke.... ) Learn it, know it, live it...... Rant from the anal one is over...... **BTW, I know this stuff doesn't really matter, but it is what we Mercedes dorks do.....**

So, WRT to new wagons, there is no badging that indicates wagon vs. sedan. If I had an E320 CDI Wagon (hey, a guy can dream right?), is that the "proper" terminology? I'm confused why MB dropped the TD/TE lettering. Now all their E-class cars sound the same.

Hey JimmyL, thought you'd get a kick out of this... Go to MBUSA's Technical Literature site (it can be found from mbusa.com): http://www.classictechlit.mbusa.com/MB/ Select Model year 87, then check out the options in the Model list, you'll see stuff like: 300DT and 300TDT

New glow plugs, still no start
OK, I just finished replacing my glow plugs, and the beast still won't start. The old ones dind't look too aweful bad, but they all ohmed out at over 50k each, the new ones, when checking right from the connector at the glow plug relay, all show .7 or less.
I have NOT changed or primed the fuel filters yet, but I have pumped the hand primer pump. Would that also cause a complete no start? It seems like it kind of wants to fire on a couple cylinders, but thats really about it. Also, my glow plug light on the dash iss till out. Any idea's? The relay is putting out 12 volts, I checked it with a meter myself. I'm about to go get a can of fresh fuel, and change/prime the new fuel filters, and pray it starts after that, but any suggestions would be really, REALLY appreciated right now. Thanks everybody!!! |

Did you remove the hard lines to change the glow plugs?
Changing filters is always a good place to begin when you first pickup a vehicle. No telling how long the secondary has been there. The vehicle does not have a factory fuel/water separator. If it's been added by the PO, you'll need to make sure it's not contributing to your problems. |

and tell them this, ex:84 mercedes 300 turbo diesel they will ask you TD or TDT because that is what comes up on their screen. So, it isn't only "some secretary at Mercedes " that uses these letters. And yes, I have ordered a rear axle for my w123 at autozone(flame suite on). Louis.
