Wishful thinking. They don't care what you burn, all they want is to scare people away from (foreign) diesel cars. This law came out just in time when MB and VW/Audi introduced their new generation of ultra clean diesel engines. They can't prohibit registration of those, because they meet NY (and CA?) emissions requirements. It's all politics, it's not the environment.

I agree, and my comment was a joke.

I don't see what's wrong with asking bus/truck diesel drivers to turn their engines off if they're going to sit for more than 5 minutes, if you're within the metro (downtown) area. They're loud and they put out a lot of stinky fumes when sitting in one place.

You really a taxi driver or is that a joke?

When I went to DC a few years ago they said the same thing. I asked our bus driver and he said it was a security/terrorism thing.

Well, that's just freakin' BRILLIANT
!!!!

Last I looked most ambulances were all Ford E350 vans with DIESEL engines. Let's just go ahead and sacrifice some of those those silly patients on the altar of political correctness and let them die.

I would love to hear the thoughts of NYC ambulance drivers and EMS techs on this one

Obviously there should be exceptions to the rule for emergency crews. Calm down.

Oh and this isn't a PC issue, it's a noise/pollution one.

You can stand outside of the Port Authority building on 42nd street and choke from the diesel fumes. Not only do they have city busses but a myriad of bus companies that come in from Jersey and Westchester for those who want to use mass transit but the train may not be close by. My wife used to take a private bus from East Rutherford to the Port Authority. She walked a couple of hundred yards to catch the bus and then 12 blocks to her office. It was very convenient for her. Even though the signs are there, I don't know how well they are enforced.

I think that in 2008 the second generation of Bluetech engines will be out with urea injection and that they will be clean enough to be sold in NY. I also think that you can bring in a 2007 as a used car from another state.

I don't think taxifahrer is a taxi driver. He has or had a 240D that is the light yellow color the same as all the taxi cabs in Germany. He was trying to sell it a few months ago.

If New York is a peoples republic vs. Mississippi, I will take the people's republic with better schools, state sponsered health insurance for all children who can not afford it and a more cosmopolitan population. Of course we have one of the greatest cities in the world too.

If you look at the law, you can clearly see that it is limited to vehicles 8,500 lbs or more, and there is a decent sized list of exceptions to the rule, including all emergency vehicles.

Also, looks like this has been a law since 1990, so we're hardly talking about new news here.

Someone told me that it also had something to do with CAFE standards and that because NY already had so many diesel trucks and pieces of heavy equipment they couldn't allow diesel passenger cars. They do however allow light diesel trucks. I see many Ford, Chevy and Dodge trucks with diesel engines.

However, because my car is a 1985 (old) diesel car, I am exempt from NYS emissions inspections. My annual inspections are for safety equipment only and costs a meager $10.

Good, its a noise and polution issue. It stinks enough in the city, the less all engines are run the better.
