How to change transmission indicator light bulb
Not specifically diesel related, but is there a light bulb that illuminates the transmission shift quadrant indicator, and how do I replace it?
Car is my 1982 300SD (W126) |
remove the carpet in the tray, remove the bolts holding the wood trim in place, and it should reveal the bulb and such.

On the SD, the shift quadrant indicator is illuminated by fiber optics.......the same as what illuminates the switches in the dash panel.
The bulb for this is buried somewhere in the dash........driver's side I believe..........I've still got to find it to fix the same problem on the SD. You should also see most of your switches on the center panel without any illumination.........they all get light from the same source. |
Same question 300CE
Would the fix be the same on an '88 W124 coupe?
Mine died yesterday, three days after the original radiator was replaced. (Only lasted 20 years. Harrumph!;):D ) |

I just replaced all these bulbs and placed a pictorial on the forum. You can do it in an hour - took me about 4-6 hours - if you follow the tutorial. At first the bulbs are a little hard to recognize because they are so small and they are covered by a bulb holder. It is actually not a bad job now that it's over.
Will look for the post. Looks like I told a story. Cannot find a pictorial by myself. However here is the excellent pictorial that I used - from benzguy. It is absolutely fantastic. Good luck. www.benzguy.piczo.com |
