1987 300D poor performance

I am looking at a 1987 300D with over 160,000miles. The car will not go over 40mph. I am not where the car is located. Any idea what would cause this problem? Thanks Dan

It's a diesel engine. Top speed when new was 41 mph. The fact that it will still go 40 mph is a testament to what a fine engine it is. Seriously, you should probably get a pre-purchase inspection. Having to dig into that engine would probably exceed the value of the car.

Of course not.
Doesn't this model have the 603 turbo? I've driven a 1980 240D at 75 mph and my E300 can easily break that.

My guess is a transmission problem if the engine is running fine. Did Mercedes have the "limp-home mode" this long ago? I know if the computer in my E300 detects a serious problem the transmission won't shift out of 2nd gear. This could be what's limiting it to 40mph.

That was sarcasm.

There was not a "limp" mode on the MB diesels until the 1990/91 300D 2.5.

Slow diesel

Fuel filters,air filters....first things to change.....classic symptoms.....

Pre-purchase inspection is money well spent.....

the boost lines for the turbo also seem to be a common issue with the 603's. That could also keep the car at 40mph, they probably need a cleaning.
