squeeling blower
 

The blower on the heater in my car squeels for the first few minutes after starting. Is this a symptom of brushes as the other posts talk about, or is it a bearing? Are the bearings replaceable? How do I check it?

Probably bearings. Remove the motor and check for axial play. The problem with replacing only the bearings is that neither MB nor Bosch list the bearings you need. You have to find replacements by size. You might as well get new brushes too.

Had the same problem on the 124. Bought a motor, while waiting for it, I pulled the old one, cleaned and lubed it, put it back in, been working great for more than year now. New motor sits in a box on the shelf. Not sure you'll be as lucky with the 126, single squirrel cage motor, but it's worth a try. If the bearings aren't shot.

Actually it is bushings not bearings, and in time they get dirty and dry out. I removed my fan, disassembled it, cleaned and lubed the bushings and armature shaft. Scotchbrite works well for that.
Use a non-detergent type oil, such as Zoom Spout (at hardware stores) or 3-1 oil in the blue and white can, not the black.

I have to ask, was that a 126 motor you manged to get apart, or one of the other models?
I was trying to get my blower motor apart to possibly replace the bushings, but it appears that the motor casing is pressed and staked together when it was originally built.

Transmission fluid works great as a lubricant for small electric motors. Don't get any on the brushes, or it you do, clean off before using with a degreaser. A syringe works well for getting into tight places.

I have to agree with the tranny fluid, it's got no odour. I used hoppes (gun oil) which smells great when you use it once in awhile. But every time you turn the blower on is too much. Lasted about six months, summer heat finally got rid of the odour. Stay away from any lube with a distinctive smell;)
