Euro 240D engine parts vs U.S. 240D

Greetings All,
I have a Euro 240D with a broken timing chain and broken cam. The car is in terrific condition & has a 4 speed. I have an 82 U.S. 240D which I was told has a rebuilt engine. U.S. 240 also supposedly has a rebuilt ip. I am trying to get the U.S. 240D started so that I can transplant the engine. I have primed the fuel filter and have fuel going to the ip. When I disconnect the injector lines, as the engine turns over, I get small spurts of fuel from each line. I assume this is correct. It turns over easily, but so far has not started. I plan to try WD 40 on it Saturday.

My question is, does anyone know if the Euro ip and exhaust manifold will bolt up to the U.S. 240D? Would there be any advantage to swapping these parts over or should I just use the standard U.S. parts? I am a little suspicious as to whether or not the U.S. ip was actually rebuilt or not. The donor car only has 180,000 miles on it.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks, Wayne

How are the glow plugs? Compression? Go easy with the WD-40!

The only thing I know for sure that is different between the US and Euro engines (besides emissions junk) is the Injection Pump. Your 82 may have EGR which could be cleanly eliminated using the manifolds from the Euro engine.

I haven't checked the glow plugs, but when I switch the car on, the dashlight stays on for several seconds. I just started trying to get it started yesterday. I am under the impression that if the glow plugs are bad, that the dashlight won't come on. Am I wrong about this?

The dash light usually only quits if two or more are bad.

All 4 of my glow plugs were bad, and the dashlight still came on as it should. Car would not start...
