Drop the car on the roof and the back window just pops out.

Because we are so politically correct in the USA, I also found it disorienting in that video clip (at about 9 seconds) of the kid hitting the dash - that the kid was a dark-skinned dummy.

Never see that in the USA........

It took me a while to figure out what it exactly was hitting the dash. At first I thought it was luggage. :dizzy2:

I think that when the W123 had a driver airbag it also had automatic seat belt tensioning. Not just an inertia device, there are electrical connections to the seat belt reel. I have seen them on German eBay. I also have W123 literature from Germany and it talks about the automatic seatbelts. I have never seen a US version W123 that had ABS or airbag.

I recall a post a while back where someone was sitting in traffic due to roadwork in their W123 wagon. There was some snow on the ground so it was slippery. A new Toyota rear ended him. His rear bumper was smashed but that was about it. The Toyota was totalled.;)

Carbon fiber has 6x more impact absorbtion than steel

Even though it's light years away from a 123. The Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren is not actually crash test rated, it's carbon fiber construction makes it lighter and stronger than steel. Check out a 90+mph head on crash with a VW Golf . The McLaren Driver walked away, other guy was not quite as lucky.
Check out the pictures

Here's the story

Also check out the lecture in my sig "winning the oil end game" for more info on carbon fiber.

W111 crash test videos

There's also a promotion video of the W111-model that shows a couple of crash tests.

Got to love the music.. I don't know what the german guy is saying but I guess it isn't about bashing the car.. :D

i was on the vwvortex and saw a post from a guy, this was about a year ago.he was in an accident and all the airbags popped(side curtain, seats, pillars, and steering wheel, dash.and it was gonna cost something like 11,000 dollars to replace all of em.

I like the one where they drop the car....

This is nothing but impressive. We are talking about cars finished designet more than 30 years ago. Try doing this to any other cars the same age.

Mercedes had the high strength safety cage concept fully implemented back in 1951. They were the first to design a vehicle in such a manner. The W123's can also have their trunks crushed all the way to the fuel tank and still be fully intact (I've seen it).

Why do you think a Volvo, even a 240, is safer? What's your reasoning?

Mercedes has made it a corporate policy not to enforce patents on safety devices

Watch this video and tell me if you will ever think about driving a VW Bus again. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TPpU5azjCB8

Wonder how accurate this post is:

This video was of a test of the capabilities of a newly installed crash test facility, NOT a test of the VW T3 Doka they smashed--- note the absence of dummies and checkerboard timing marks. That orange Doka was a junker, a very badly rusted 20 year old vehicle formerly owned by the German highway department. They smashed it at 100km/h head-on into a concrete wall with 1000kg loaded in the bed to show off how powerful their new catapult system was.

How about this 2000 model-year Fiat Seicento 1.1. NO airbag.

That's probably not a car we'll be seeing in the US anytime soon. Looks like an airbag wouldn't do much good there. I wonder how the new US-legal minicars, like the Toyota Yaris, would fare.

Happy Motoring, Mark
