help: 240D glow plug issue (movie)
mini-movie depicting glowplug issue:
http://www.usta-va.com/rob/MB/DSCN0537.MOV (2.4mb) essentially, when i go to start my 240D i turn the key forward and the glow plug light does not illuminate. however, if i turn the key back and forth a number of times eventually it will illuminate (in the mini-movie the glow plug light came on after turning the key back and forth six times). this issue arose yesterday, and a potentially related issue that preceeded this began 3 or 4 days ago: the buzzer that warns you that the key is still in when you open the door - now comes on when the driver door is opened even when there is no key in the ignition... what do you think is the cause? are the issues related? TIA and cheers!

I'd suspect a bad ground somewhere. I had a similar GP ligh issue a while back. It would light up once in a great while, but most of the time it wouldn't. I found a burned circuit on one of the gauges. I soldered it and that fixed the problem. You might try pulling the cluster and put a temporary ground directly to the back of the gauges and see if the light comes on then. If it does, pull the gauges out and inspect them for a burned spot.

Did you check if the glow plugs are working even when the light doesn't come on?

FWIW - it turned out to be just one bad glow plug. i used the glow plug testing procedures in the www. dieselgiant.com.
one note, the plug numbers on the relay correspond with the glow plugs counting from front to back. after determining that #3 was the bad plug via testing resistance at the relay, i initially made the mistake of pulling glow plug #3 in the firing order (as listed on the top of the valve cover). cheers!
