300SD timing chain cover
I have a timing chain cover leak on my 82 300SD and was wondering how hard it was to replace the gasket?

You mean valve cover gasket? Four nuts & some throttle linkage. Paul.

The 617 does not have a timing chain cover. As mentioned above, you're probably looking at the valve cover. It does require a new gasket when you remove it and the nuts MUST be torqued to 11 ft.-lbs. Don't try and do it without a torque wrench on this one........or you'll definitely get a leak.

Maybe I should go back. I had the car serviced at a fairly good shop. I asked them to look in to some oil leaks I had. They repaired one on the turbo (missing a O ring) and pointed out that I had one on the oil cooler and they told me the timing chain cover was leaking. I assume they meant on the front of the engine as it would be on a standard gas engine. I would assume the timing chain would have a cover....

Better question them more thoroughly. The 617 has no timing chain cover. The chain runs in a casting within the block.

His answer to this new information will help determine/reinforce that.......
