This hurts my head...The journal measurements on my camshaft that is on the kitchen table are 48.93mm-48.95mm. This translates in my Model 123 Series Haynes Manual to a code 10. I found camshaft info. on a timing chain link on this forum. A code 10 translates to these 2 engines...A w123 615.940 44kw 200D and a 616.912 53kw 220D and I believe a 240D. The car does have pencil glow plugs and I have read that 1979 was a change over year? I can not find anything but the block numder on this engine. I looked again today. The engine ID is not under number 5 glow plug beside the oil filter housing. Is ther somewhere else or am I going to have to have this engine pulled back out? I'd like to order in a camshaft! If it is not a 300D, I'm hoping it is a 240D. It is a good engine.

I found out from the parts department in a shop in Chapel Hill, NC( A Better Wrench) that has worked on my car a couple of times in the last 3 months that the camshaft I have is a later model. I gave him the numbers on the shaft, that translated to 617 051 0501. The latest # for the camshaft is 617 051 1101. The journals on the later camshaft are 48.92mm-48.95mm as are mine. They order only MB parts, over $400.00 so I will probably order on line. The MB dealership would not translate that # for me. I never did find the 14 digit ID number...??? It is not where it should be! He did say that pencil glow plugs could be in a 1979 300D because that was the change over year, but the later camshaft indicates that I have an 80 or 81 engine?
