What kind of brake calipers are on my '82 300D?

The rear passenger side brake caliper is leaking brake fluid. I called autozone and they said it could be one of three brands of calipers and I would have to do my own research to find out which one it is. Also, is there a rebuild kit i could buy instead of replacing the whole thing?

My 82 300D has ATE. But that's no guarantee that yours does.

It should say on the caliper itself. I've got ATE and Bendix on my two. I recommend buying the rebuilt calipers. Not too much more than the kit, and you don't have to worry if the piston is going to hang up due to old rust or wear.
I used O'Reilly's, and have been pleased with them on the back of the wagon. (ATE)

so does it really matter which kind of rebuilt caliper i get...if it has ate on it now can i just buy the bendix...or vice-versia...seems like that would work to me...I don't understand why the parts guy would tell me to find out which kind i have if both rebuilds will work in place of the other...

it really does not matter which brand. they all have the same size piston and brake pads. some say you should only replace in like branded pairs. personally i have never done this and have had no problems as a result. if you want to keep the same brand you can check. the ates have a pin that drives out with a drift toward the inside of the car. the bendix has a pin that is retained with a small "hairpin".

it is a pretty simple job to remove and replace. i agree, that the cost of rebuilts is so reasonable that doing an actual rebuild may not make much sense.
