Vacuum Pump Removal

Hello All,
With your help I was able to figure that my vacuum pump is weak and needs a rebuild. I am waiting for the rebuild kit so I have been searching for the way to remove the vacuum pump. I remember stumbling upon a thread that showed how to but I cannot find it now. So, can anyone help me with some instructions on how to take the vacuum pump out or does anyone know a diy article or thread that I havent found in my searching so far?

Thanks

DK

I assume it's one of your 1983 300sd's

Pretty easy. Remove the power steering belt, disconnect the vacuum line, unbolt the vacuum pump.

Clearly visible in this picture.

So there is enough room in there to remove the pump without messing around with the radiator?

Thanks

The only time I have done this was on a parts car with no radiator, but I recommend when you have it out, look at the crank sensor. These are a PITA to get at & get lots of crud buildup. Mine has a allen screw held collar retainer.

Follow these instructions:
http://diymbrepair.com/easley/Rebuild_vac_pump.htm

Make sure you build the board, you'll be glad you did.
Make sure you buy a gasket, not included in repair kit.

Do not remove the radiator or any belts. Not necessary.

I may be joining you in this repair. I drove my wife's 77 300d this morning and noticed it was low on vacuum. Where did you purchase the rebuild kit?

Wow, thanks for the link. It is awsome. I ordered my rebuild kit from http://www.***************/search/product.aspx?sid=i524fwvrjzkkcz45wsy0ld45&makeid=800016@Mercedes&modelid=1194027@300SD&year=1983&cid=18@Electrical%20%26%20Vacuum&gid=5025@Vacuum%20Pump%20Repair%20Kit
That is the cheapest place I could find with the help of some members of this forum. Darn, I did forget to order the other seal. Looks like I will be ordering again.

My 2 cents.

Vacuum pump gasket. Removing the pump. You don't know where the cam is so you may have pressure on the unit while unbolting it. This may lead to a stripped bolt Allen insert section, due to the pressure on it. I did this. My recommendations, remove all bolts, but two bolts that are opposite to each other. Then hold pressure on the front of the vacuum pump while pushing the pump against the block. Unscrew the two remaining bolts and then release the pump. Also make sure the Allen bolt heads are very clean.
Clean the surfaces and I used High Tack to install the gasket and then bolt in the vacuum pump.

I know that. In a previous thread by the original poster(I think), there was a discussion of the significant difference in price between the one at the link above and another parts source. Someone suggested contacting Phil to discuss the price difference. I was curious as to whether this suggestion was ever followed and what the outcome was.
