We have Honda diesels over here, in the Accord. They are fantastically quiet and refined, just as you'd expect with Honda.

I'm disappointed. From this article it sounds like here in the US we won't get any Civic diesels and only the larger cars will have a diesel option (the Accord is still a maybe at this point). That's completely retarded. The rest of the world has had Civic and Accord diesels for many years and from what I've read they're wonderful cars. And that idiot GM Vice Chairman claims that diesels cost too much money and implies that electric and hybrid cars are more economical. Is he kidding?
Oh and BTW, my 240D isn't "sooty", "belching", or "sputtering", thank you very much.

Honda Diesel
Here is some information about the Honda Diesel.
http://world.honda.com/HDTV/news/2003-4030226_1a/ In an Accord it is supposed to get over 45 MPG combined.

Oh, that's a good one... Wait til the batteries wear out (7 yrs, according to someone I can't remember right now), there's a 1500 bill. Oh, did I forget to mention the VW 45 mpg diesels, versus the 37 mpg Hybrid Accord??
I'll keep the 300D for a while longer. |

The cost of battery replacement would probably be covered by the manufacturer. At least Honda has been pretty good about it. I was mainly referring to the price difference between a diesel and an equivalent gasser, and the price difference between a gas hybrid and an equivalent gasser. The latter is much bigger and it makes it difficult to recoup the extra cost in fuel savings. With diesels it's much easier because the initial cost is lower and diesels and gas hybrids get about the same mileage when comparing similar cars. Having said that, I'm still very interested in pure electric cars. If the market had something like GM's EV1 of the 90's, I would be very interested. I wouldn't trade in all of my diesels, but I wouldn't mind replacing one or two of them with such a car.

I have read other articles stating that Honda plans to have I4 diesels here in late 2008. With Honda's reputation for their products I believe that once they introduct a diesel in the US the anti-diesel paradigm/mindset that has been in the US for so long will be smashed. This will leave all of the other auto companies (except for DCX and VW) with their jaws an the floor and nothing to offer in comparision.
GO HONDA!! |
