Unbolt the torque converter

I'm trying to swap trannys in a 79 300sd, with an identical one. I can't see how the torqe converter is to be unbolted from the flex plate. There is an access hole, but the subframe is in the way of removing the bolts. Any help would be appreciated.

I know on later 617s at bottom of the bellhousing, there is a black plastic cover you can remove to get to the torque convertor bolts.
