Was planning to start Jan 23rd, and go DFW - Amarillo - Albuquerque - Moab - Salt Lake City - Boise.
I've never been able to sleep in a seat, either, but with that 6'8" distance, a Therma-rest in the cargo area should be nice and cozy if the cold don't kill me.

I would just try real hard to come up with extra 100 bucks that two nights in Motel 6 will cost you. Why suffer?

300TD makes a nice bed if you put down a layer of foam-rubber or blankets in the back. I'm 6'0" and I had no problem driving from VT to WA this way... can't quite stretch out all the way but it works fine. Stick to truck stops, you will get hassled at a store parking lot. Truck stops are by far the safest place to sleep, and try to avoid highway rest stops... walmart lots are apparently okay but I'd just stick to the truck stops due to ease and safety..

Man, that brings back a cold memory. In about 1992 my wife and I were travelling from Denver to Flagstaff around Christmas in our 73 Chevy wagon and decided to pull over just outside of Bluff, UT and sleep in the wagon at the put-in on the San Juan River. When we woke up the next morning it was 35 below zero.
It then suddenly occurred to me that we were in a pretty dangerous situation. We had driven about 5 miles on a dirt road to the put-in and even the main road was miles from town. If the car didn't start, we'd be in a life threatening circumstances.
I started the car while still in my sleeping bag and I don't think a internal combustion engine coming to life ever felt any better. We'd camped there a number of times in the summer when running the river but it just hadn't crossed my mind how alone we would be in that cold weather.
I tend to think more about places to sleep nowadays.

If the girlfriend is ever to be a wife get the Motel 6. She will not let you live this ride in the Benz down for the rest of your life. If it were my wife we may just drive straight through. If it were my girlfriend we may be a few days late

I've slept in the back seat of my 300D-T (sedan). But I tend to curl up when I sleep and not move alot

Not related but I once did sleep on the ledge of a large picture window(inside) at the embassy suites in chicago on the 31st floor. What a view when I woke up. I freaked out and fell on the floor.Note.. the ledge was maybe a foot wide and I slept on my side... slept pretty good too(until I woke up and forgot where I was)

I have slept in the back of a pickup a number of times while camping. Far better then a cold tent, 8ft bed, plus a cap and air matress make it comfortable enough.

But a car, heck with that. I'd either buy a motel room or just drive through the night. Slam enough Redbull and you should be able to stay up almost forever.

dude

Dude,
You're girlfriend may say she's cool with sleeping in the car, but I'm pretty sure she really isn't. Sleeping in a car is only better than sleeping in or under a canoe. Once she/you need to hit the head, all bets are off. I wouldn't try it with my wife, or any of my girlfriends. That didn't sound right. I meant my old girlfriends. Uh. I mean my previous girlfriends. Please let us old married guys know how it goes....as if we can't see it coming. All the best.

Why is everyone so worried about the cold? What's a diesel for? Fill her up right before hittin the hay and let her run all night with the climate control set. Like having a furnace in your bedroom with a lullaby shaker built in.

That'd be my route. Fuel for an overnight idle will run about $15, tops, more than likely. Cheap hotel fare.

My $.02

I'm 6'4" and I've slept in the back of my wagon before. Kind of a tight fit for me with a sleeping bag and I had to lay diagonally even with the front seats moved forward.

It's one of the main features I miss about not having a wagon anymore.

this is the only reason I want a td for: road trips in this wonderful country and sleeping in the back!! perfect! I used to do that in europe in my citroen 2.5 turbodiesel break (station). wonderful times. gotta be a bit careful indeed. blinded windows or a safe parking spot near 18 wheelers works good.
please, anyone, sell me a td with a bad engine!!!

Idling a diesel for long periods of time is more stressful on it than running at highway speed. Say you idle for 6-8 hrs, can you imagine how much carbon's going to build up during that time? Oil burning also increases during idle, if you're sitting in traffic at a standstill for a while, and then it starts moving, don't you notice the blue smoke behind you when you start putting a load on it? Also, you have to take into account that you may have exhaust leaks into the cabin, these are old cars, little grommets everywhere aren't always air tight, carbon monoxide, etc... May lay down to sleep and not wake up. I'm pretty sure folks can think of other reasons why camping in the back of an old, idling MB wagon isn't a good idea.

Just go to Motel 6 or Holiday Inn Express, I'm pretty sure you and your gf will get a better night's sleep in a bed than in a wagon, and like the others say, deep down she probably doesn't want to sleep in the back of a car, and just hasn't told you or doesn't have the heart to. The only example of sleeping in a vehicle that would be best is either a big SUV, or big rig sleeper cab.
