98 E300td Rumbling Noise
Hello Everyone, New member and great site
Noise question. HAve a 98 w/122K purchased 7,000 mi ago. on Cold starts and particularly in reverse and in right turns the car rumbles quite loud and noticeably. I have ruled out bearing as the rumbling goes away as the engine get up to temp. Have had no other issues with the car but this is annoying as the air temps are now lower. Seems to be engine related as the noise is reduced if I put the trans in Neutral as I coast downhill out of the drive way. Any suggestions would be appreciated |

Engine mounts could be the problem. Weak on the driver's side, so the engine leans over as you make a right turn. Its a heavy engine.

Those were the exact symptoms of my 1998 E300D TurboDiesel, and as suggested by the Parrot of Doom, the engine mount on the driver's side was the culprit. I just replaced it a few days ago and the machine now runs smoothly again. Jim

I had very similar symptoms. All my engine mounts had to be replaced plus one tranny mount.

I also have the same symptoms and believe the motor mounts are to blame. The noise is similar to a wheel bearing groan but goes away when you put your foot on the accelerator...it's my next project once I replace my leaky fuel lines.

Chances are you'll have to remove the mounts to check their condition, as the weight of the engine often compresses any cracks/faults so you can't see them.

I can confirm that my rumbling noise went away completely after replacing the 2 motor mounts.

Don't forget the transmission mount, located at the back of the gearbox. Its a rubber block, easily replaceable. I'm checking mine this week.

If those mounts are original, don't even bother checking them. Just have new ones on hand and replace them as all above have said. Just did mine a couple of weeks ago. Same symptoms as you, but maybe not quite as bad. Do a search. Parrott of Doom and I have posted pictures with part numbers in another post.

I just dropped my 97 E300 off at my Indy last night to have the same issue resolved.

The weather here is terrible, I've not been able to get under the car so far to have a look. This is a picture of a new mount: |

Just picked mine up this eve and I fully agree. Makes a world of difference, it even got rid of some of the slop when I am coasting to stop and transmission downshifts. The mechanic told me the transmission mount was fine. Funny thing the dealer last week couldnt "replicate" the problem, even though I told them to check in the morning when its cold they waited until noon and temp was in 50's so it wasnt noticeable. Supposedly they "looked" them over and I was told they were fine.

I have not replaced the transmission mount, but I probably should. It's only about a $20 part. I ought to make it part of my 100,000 mile service. Have you done yours? Easy to do?
