Never actually done this on a W123, but when I did it on a W201 190E 2.3-16, I got stuck at removing the nut that holds the half shaft in the wheel hub and ended up towing the car to PepBoy's and having them remove the nut and put the new half shaft in, which was very reasonable. So, if you can not find any help anywhere else, you could always try PepBoys.

Good luck, Jim

I just did this job right before Christmas on my '84. Its not bad at all. Took me about an hour to get the one off that I was replacing and about half of that was just cleaning off the differential cover to get to the nuts. Its really not a bad job at all. Just remember to remove the hub end first as there was a thread recently about someone who tried to pull it out of the diff first and it wouldn't go. Had a heck of a time trying to get it out if memory serves. I'm sure there's others here with much more experience but feel free to pm if you have any questions.

Use a brass drift to knock the axle out of the hub first. You'll need to get the rear cover of the differential off and remove the clip on the other end of the axle inside.

Is this a job that can be done in the driveway in the snow?Anybody know any shops in the area?If for nothing else than a roof!
also where can I get a reman w/o sending one in first.car still moves for now,so I think getting the axles first would make good sense.CVJ in denver wants the orig first and european auto only has new.I beleive phil also only has new.there is a distinct lack of boneyards up her in the cold for some reason.

Some folks have used Autozone rebuilds, but the longevity is questionable.

who do you and/or anyone else recommend then for axles (reman) without a core first.as i said before car still moves and is our only one.would like to get those axles first and then return the cores.minimal downtime.

If I was doing it, I'd get one of the folks on here to find me some good used axles from the boneyard where the boots are in bad shape. Then, send those to CVJ for new boots and grease. I got a set for the SDL's on e-bay for $25.00. Couldn't resist for the exact situation that you now have.

so does that mean that the ones you have for the sdl will also fit my 300D-T.
also what could you not resist...telling me about the ones for sale or just the selling part.

Unfortunately, the W126 takes a slightly different shaft otherwise you could use these.

I was pointed in the direction of the e-bay listing from the folks on here. I couldn't resist the price for them, even though I don't need to replace axles on either SDL right now.

one last question I think.
when looking for new axles I see that there are two different kinds of axles.
homokinetic and annular.Does it matter if one is annular and the other homokinetic.this is the one listed on e-bay right now. http://my.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll
will this one work on my 84.
