Exhaust/Turbo leak??

Have been productive this weekend under the cars, replaced the power antenna, rear differential fluid and AT filter and fluid on the 300
D. Also replaced the thermostat in the SD.

The 300D has been making a raspy whine upon throttle introduction, and while doing the AT work today, I noticed what appears to be an exhaust leak near the turbo area. This might make sense given a slight chugging sound (to me) that is more noticable at low rpm.

How hard are gasket replacements, and is this something I can do on my back in the driveway.

Which gasket is it, the one between the turbo and the manifold or the one between the manifold and the head? The head to manifold gasket is not too bad. It took me about 3 or so hours total to pull and reinstall the manifold with turbo attached when I installed my pyrometer.

I have not tried removing the turbo with the manifold in place but my hynes manual says it can be done (with the garret, not the KKK). I will be attempting this procedure next week to swap out my turbo for a rebuilt one. I do know that I had a heck of a time getting the turbo off, even with the assembly out of the car last time I did it. One of the nuts is so close to the manifold that a box wrench will not fit on it. It took a lot of heat and careful use of an open end wrench to get it off. I used liberal amounts of antisieze on reassembly so hopefully it will be easier this time.

AT this point I am not sure, I ran out of time and just happened to notice it since I was leak checking my work. Should I be able ttell by taking off the air cleaner, or do i need to put her back up on ramps and crawl back underneath to sort it out.

Is this a on ramps or jacks repair? Sounds like I have many hours ahead...

My car had a manifold repair kit. It contained a gasket for the turbo, oil lines and the manifold. It also had an oring for the oil drain tube and turbo. It had some crush washers that I dont need. My turbo needed two large orings to mate the turbo to the manifold. The kit only had one. I purchased slightly bigger orings. I pulled the entire system together - manifolds, turbo and cat. Putting it back on is a different story . I had to do them one at a time.

OK, so after removing the air cleaner to take a look, suddenly there seems to be no leak. I am used to chasing gremlins and am patient - trained by early 911's and their quirks.

With the strange mid 70's in January weather here in VA, just finished shining the D up, they do look so much better with clean wheels.

Here's what I think happened. While replacing the short hose on the thermostat housing a month or so ago, I removed the air filter housing. I think the noises/leak etc.. are the result of not aligning the drain pipe that comes out of the bottom, I believe that was the whining/whistling sound and occasional rattle. REplacing everything today I was very careful and meticulous and think that is why the noise and leak have gone.

Does that sound reasonable?
