It's the gears turning inside the tranny. Unless it's really loud, don't worry about it.

the trannys are notorious for rattling a bit in neutral with the clutch out. a bad throw out would rattle with the clutch depressed.

I think I will replace the "shim" that goes between the slave cylinder and tranny housing. It's supposed to be there and won't be much trouble at all to do. I will report back once I do this. Maybe it is just the gears but I should know for sure once I replace that piece.

That fat "shim" is designed so you can stick a gauge in and check how much the clutch disc has warn, you don't need it. The tranny in my "78" makes that noise, I don't believe theres a problem. I would agree it could be the throw out bearing but that doesn't seem likely in your case.

did this ever get resolved?

I have this problem in my W123. When the clutch is down, the very slight grinding sound goes away. I like the thought that it might be gears, because that makes sense. Also K.E.'s explanation of a spring finger dragging on the throwout makes sense. My sound goes away if I pump the clutch a couple of times. It also goes away when I hold the clutch DOWN.

I've theorized it could be either gears, input shaft bearing, little roller bearing behind input shaft bearing or a dragging clutch spring that gets realigned when I pump the clutch.

I'm thinking of replacing my clutch soon but I'll be really mad if I replace the pilot bearing, throwout and clutch/pp and it still grinds when cold.

When I was a kid my dad changed his Pinto clutch. We were really poor(and dumb) so he didn't buy the throwout bearing. It was a little rough so he sprayed WD40 in it. What do you think happened? Yup, when the clutch was pressed DOWN it made a grinding sound after the WD dried up.

So I've been a bit confused. I'm glad to hear this problem came up after your clutch job, which means it probably isn't the input shaft bearing or tranny parts...unless a slight mismatch in shaft alignment after you put things together is messing things up. Naahhh. Impossible.

Good luck, I'm really curious to see what the problem was. The fact that it happened after your clutch job probably means it isn't the gears. Something is dragging in there.

it probably rattled before the clutch job too, but he didn't listen as hard.

the german trannies are notorious for rattling in neutral with the clutch out.

i have owned a bunch of them in mercedes and bmws.

Car is running great and no problems with the clutch. I think that noise is simply the normal sound of the gears in the tranny.

A high pitched "bearing squeel" sound when the clutch is ingauged would be a release bearing?? Pilot bearing maybe?

Ah No, Tom, I was asking you if you thought, a high pitched bearing noise, with the clutch in was a release bearing. I have such a noise and was following his problem.

Funny Noise

Slight hijack:

When I start my car from cold, I generally let it idle to warm, and finish loading the car for the day. When I take my foot off the clutch (in neutral), sometimes I get a fairly loud, jangly, grindy noise. When I depress the clutch again - sometimes takes twice - the sound goes away, even though I let the clutch back out. It never comes back on its own, only on another cold start.

Any ideas?

That sounds like a siezed pilot bearing to me.

That sounds like the gear rattle noted above but with a twist. Maybe your gears are a little more loose. Have you checked your tranny lube level? If it were a little low it might allow the upper shaft's lube to drain away while sitting.

Good Luck

Thanks Tom...I was hopping for a release bearing, but if I have the tranny dropped, pulling the f/w isn't that much more. I've never had a failed pilot bearing, I spoze it would be possible too trash the crank:mad::eek:

Edit...musta had a "senior moment" no need too pull the flywheel, just replace "release bearing" and "pilot bearing" at the same time, maybe clutch disc and p/p too:rolleyes:

Thanks, Tom, I'll bet you're right.

The tranny leaks slowly from the front seal & I top it up every oil change -- just a few ounces, but very likely enough to cause the noise ... and when I push the clutch in again a time or two, perchance the upper end gets lubed. I'd change the seal, but the leak hasn't increased in 50,000 miles & it's awkward doing jobs that size in front of an apartment.
