Advice ?

Hello- new to this site and looking for some info- this is the story- I have a 1966 Ford Econoline PU that is in really good shape and I want to install a Diesel in it with a auto trans- the question I have is " which 300 series Mercedes diesel would be best?" I live on the west coast and there a lot of very near rusty, but good running 300's around and I thought this might make a good swap- Idea's
thanks and I hope I get a lot of infromation

OM617 Turbo would work. Don't know if it will have enough power for you but it is the largest of the sedan engines. They are usually found in the 300D Turbodiesel. Why not look for a good 4BT?

As heavy as that truck is, I would go with a turbo engine. Do not expect a speed demon, though.

I know a guy who transplanted a 617 Turbo into a mid 60s Chevy pickup. He also installed one of those "smokestack" exhaust pipes in the bed. It's got a 411 rear and he can squeel the tires. Pretty crazy. It can be done.

Check the oil sump......

I haven't looked at this personally, but have read in the past that there is a problem with location of the oil sump and crossmembers. MB's are located forward and most domestics are to the rear of the engine.

No advice but just wanted to say that sounds like a neat project. Those cabover p/u's are cool!

I've been wanting to swap a motor out of a 240D into a Scout 800 for a long time. Not my current 800 but another one.

Go for it!

+1 for the 4BT. Look for an old bread truck to use as a donor. I get 24 MPG out of my 1 ton with a 5.9 cummins. I believe the 4bt (3.9) is the same less two bores.
I've always wondered what a lighter, 4bt powered truck could do.

Another vote for the 4BT. I'm thinking of stuffing one in a '49 Dodge Pick up.
