Looking for Repair Shop to Replace Broken Glowplug on 99 E300

Can anyone recommend a reliable independent shop in the Boston/Worcester area capable of replacing a broken glowplug? Dealers generally would not commit. Nervous about an open checkbook repair.

Thanks.

Good luck. That can be a difficult repair, and depending on how the GP was broken, could mean the head needs to be removed.

There's good news and bad news. The bad news you already know, OM 606 glow plugs can be a major PITA. The good news is that any competent mechanic should be able to carefully drill it out in just a couple of hours. We do several of these every month, and we've never had to remove the cylinder head. All it takes is a good set of drill bits and a lot of patience.

How did it get broken??? Did the tech who broke it offer any advice on the process to get it out?

Nothing beats experience with that specific issue.

Maybe she can drive it to NJ?

ILUVMILS,
Do you use left hand drill bits when you do that drilling ?

Please let us know if you go how it turns out. This is turning a very common occurrance at this point.

I'm wondering if a class-action lawsuit is in order here? If all the people who were forced to spend large sums to remove the plugs got together and went after MB they might get their money back.

It would seem at some point MB would have to admit the parts are inadequately designed and should have tried to resolve it by specifying replacement parts be made in such a way that they do not break off when being removed.

As much as I hate being litigious, the number of people who are racking up large repair bills because of what has to be concluded to be a poorly designed system is growing by leaps and bounds.

Have you checked Alldata.com or some other repository of TSB's to see if they have put out a ' fix' ... or perhaps they have one of those secret warranties which you have to ask for to get ?

There was a TSB back in January 2004 that announces the glow plug repair kit (part #611 589 00 99 00) that retails for $650. It is just a bunch of drill bits, taps, stop collets, thread inserts (similiar to helicoils), and a wire brush.
