Looking for 300TD items...

Just bought an 85 300DT and I need a few little things and don't know where to look other than the dealer. I've looked on here and the Shuman automotive forums a little and haven't come up with anything yet...

-Repair manual

-Reverse light assembly (actually, the plastic housing is fine, I just need the guts...they all fell out in a big rust ball, so I need the reflector thing and the bulb socket)

-Same for the red light opposite from the reverse (what is that light for anyway?)

-Hazard light switch (blinkers work, hazards don't)

-Hand crank for window (my rear windows are manual, think its a european model...its also got abs)

-Rear hatch springs or whatever holds the hatch open...it *almost* holds itself up

-Rear cargo area cover...i realize this may be a long shot

I may think of more later...if anyone has a suggestion of where to look for any of these things, I'd really appreciate it. I've got about 50 days left before I need to get it inspected and I'd like to be able to get the few things that it'll need to pass myself.

Thanks,
-Geoff

You need to find a junkyard, that's where you'll find most of that stuff without having to pay an arm and a leg.

Look to 800-FOR-MERC for the repair manual.

Oh and for the hatch struts, check the "Buy Parts" link at the top of the page.

1.Get the FSM from MB for $19.95 plus shipping. Well worth it.
2. Used from junkyard or someone here
3. Same deal
4. New from this site.
5. You may be able to fix it. Or check part numbers compared to a 240D which had manual windows as standard. The wagon and the sedan may be the same.
6. New from this site. Make sure you use the correct wrench to get it off. It could be hex, but later ones were M6 triple square. If you use the wrong wrench you will strip the socket head bolt and have to drill it out. Ask me how I know this.
7. I have seen them as an option on US cars but it is rare. Look on German eB ay or marktplaats.nl

Where are you? Can you say what you paid for the car? The Euro cars were not all turbos. Is yours turbo. If not does it have a manual transmission? Post some pics if you can.

You can also use the search function for many of these issues. You are not the first to encounter these problems.

My hatch struts work in weather above about 30 degrees. Below that they wont hold up the hatch.
If you do find a TD in a junkyard, pull as many parts as you can. The SLS including the engine head and pump are particularly valuable. Before I was aware of this, I stupidly left those parts on a wagon at the local Pull and Save.
Brake boosters are pretty expensive also.

Here's the ebay listing:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=260071553129

I'm in Harrisburg, PA, the car was in Wilmington. I gave the guy 3500, he said he had someone else coming to look at it a few days later that was offering more. He could have been full of it, but I wanted it anyway.

The window crank is missing, but I'll have to check compatibility with the 240D...good idea.

I did a little searching already, but mainly for the reverse light and the hazard switch so I can get it inspected.

Thanks for the info, I tried clicking the "Buy Parts" tab and entered my car info but the page froze and was trying to load but just sat there. I'll try again later. If I can get the hazard switch and hatch struts here, that would be great. I'll call Mercedes for the manual.

One other thing I just remembered is the rear wiper and washer don't work, and the wiper moves really easily by hand, like the linkage is disconnected. I'll have to check fuses, etc. Also, the floor at the rear seat, drivers side is sopping wet. I'm afraid there might be a whole in the floor.

Thanks again,
-Geoff

Weird that the front windows are power, but rears are manual.

Looks clean overall, I like the interior color.

Love the rear bumper and red colored left reverse lens. I wonder what that's all about?

I thought they were all like that...when I noticed it on mine I checked a few others on ebay and they were the same.

Anyone know whats up? When I get a working lamp in them, I'll have to see when it comes on...

The red colored lens is a fog light.
It is mandatory in Europe during inclement
weather.
It aids in being able to see the cars infront of you
in fog, mist and heavy rain, since it is as bright as the
brake lights but it is turned on by pulling out the light switch
all the way.

Louis.

All US spec W123 wagons have reverse lights on both sides, not just the right.

Looks like it doesn't have the SLS. VERY rare to see a wagon without that.

I think so too but, I believe I've seen other Euros with windows configured like that.

Kerry,
What makes you think that it doesn't have SLS?

I don't see the tank for the hydraulic fluid which is just next to the windshield washer tank on my 85TD. I also don't see the hydraulic lines going towards the engine.

Ooops. I now see it on the passenger side.
