Instrument Cluster TLC Questions

With the help of the pictorials here I successfully pulled my 82's instrument cluster without too much trouble.

How do I pull the glass off the assembly, is there a trick? I didnt want to just yank...

Does anyone have a suggestion for what is a close match for the gauge needle color? Can someone post a picture of a non-faded original?

While I am in here, I am going to fix the clock (which may be causing a drain on my battery), check all of the bulbs and clean.

What else should I do while Im in here?

Thanks,
dd

There was a post just a few weeks ago regarding pulling the glass off and repainting the needles. Seems that a certain mix of model paint glue is what you're looking for.

Edit: Here's the post (see post #3)

You don't remove the glass. You remove the gauges from the rear.

I would leave the clear plastic front on. A PO of my car tried to remove it and it is not pretty.

It's much easier to remove the kick panel and push the cluster out from behind. The hooks usually just tear the dash or leave an imprint.

How do you fix the clock? Mine works intermittently, I figure its a loose connection...

Thanks for the advice to not remove the plexi face, I thought it didnt look easy...is there any way to clean behind it? The glass around my glow/battery etc lights is kind of unsightly.

I am going by this clock repair pictorial:

http://www.diymbrepair.com/easley/clock.htm

Mine isnt working at all, and electrolytic caps have a 10-15 year life expectancy, so mine being bad is certainly makes sense to me.

Once the gauges are removed, you can clean behind it.

For cleaning the back of that instrument "glass" use very clean lint free cotton cloth or lens paper and be sure to get into the corners. Anything papery will scratch the surface. Use one of the pressurized air in a can instrument puffers to blow off every last bit of lint. Otherwise you'll see bits of lint while you are driving and it will drive you crazy.

Calling all experts...

A small spring was latched stuck magnetically to my tach gauge when I took it apart. Its about 3/8 ich wide and 3/4 of an inch long. I can't figure out where it came from.

any ideas where to look? what could it possibly go to?
