I use these for the back lighting in my 123 amd it works wonderfully.

http://www.superbrightleds.com/specs/bulb_specs.htm

The bottom ones are the high output ones and perfect white. All of the light is aimed perfectly at the plastic optics so very little light is wasted. Output is 54000 mcd its very bright.

Its been another month and they are still burning bright I'd like them to be a little brighter, I guess I could try a different bulb. but these are working fine and no further damage to the reflectors.

Maybe the more expensive ones are better? I found melting in my 123 CCU unit from the factory wattage. Any one tried LED's there?

Here's an older thread with all the links to the LEDs I'm using in my w123 wagon.

I'm VERY happy with the results and will be doing the brake lights soon.
LED replacements for light bulbs?

Here's a pic of my cluster with LEDs.

I'm running normal bulbs in my '87, can read the odo, trip-odo, clock, ... all looks good.

Might just try new bulbs, my original ones had so much filament metal sputtered on the inside of the bulb they looked smoked. Still worked, but not nearly as bright as new ones. Same with the rest of the dash illumination, new bulbs made it all readable.

It also helps if your cluster isnt melted from too high wattage bulbs. another member here sent me a cluster from a '95 with the bigger prisims and I have more light now then I know what to do with
