My experiences with LED's in the instrument cluster...so far

I used this bulb http://autolumination.com/194_marker.html LED version to replace the two instrument cluster illumination bulbs in my 124. Illumination, while not perfect is brighter than the old bulbs. It is definetly a "whiter" light. I can read all the guages except the clock easily. They have been in for about 3 days and I haven't done a lot of night driving. Heat should not be an issue with the LED's as they are very cool. I'll post to this thread my longer term results. I dont know the condition of my reflectors, maybe they could be polished to get more light. I may try the 4 LED version, but I don't know if it will fit the hole in the back of the cluster.

On a related note, I tried to replace the warning light bulbs with the #74 LED (2721 replacement) bulb, but had great trouble removing the old bulb from the socket. It appears the wires from the bulb curve around the end of the contact and are spot soldered in place. I'll try to get a pic tonite. The bulbs I could get out broke the wires off. Looks like the bulb and socket were to be replaced as a set. When inserted in the socket and replaced in the cluster the new bulbs wouldn't work. I'll have to keep working on this. Bought some of the sockets offered by the above company and they don't fit my car. Any suggestions on the warning lights would be appreciated.

Keep us posted, I had tried a set of those before in my 123 and they failed after a short period of time. I would like to use them again though in my 300D.

The only LED's I use in my cluster are in the turn signals.

I remove the dimmer and opened that unit, only to have the wiper pressure springs fly across the garage. Found both springs and cleaned the wiper portion of the dimmer with contact cleaner and fine emory. I also wiped down the dimmer coil. Used heavy grease to keep the springs within the recess of the dimmer knob and reassembled.
The lights are brighter, but could be better for my old eyes. I have not tried the LED types, but maybe next time I am in the cluster again.

I wouldn't think that an LED would put out more light than an equivalent incandescent bulb, but the idea sounds good.

LED's

I have used these with great success. The color is the biggest difference in the cluster. I also use the real small bulbs (T1.5/#74) throughout the panel to replace burned out ones. Been using them for about 8 months now, not a real long term test. You can buy the #74 with the socket, make it an easier replacement.
http://www.superbrightleds.com

The biggest difference is in the replacement of the festoon bulbs , 2 interior and 1 in the trunk. This was a tremendous light advantage, and I recommend it to all.
http://../festoon

I have heard stories of people leaving the rear interior light on and draining the battery overnight. The LED's would probably go days before draining a battery.

Wow, those festoons are cool! I'd love to see how they look at night.

If you could drain your battery with an interior light, you've got a battery problem. They're intended to run the L/R parking lights all night long without a problem.

Question Went to website.....now confused.....

Folks,

Has anyone switched to these LED Tail and Stop light bulb replacements??

These folks have several that are supposed to work in place of Tail Lamp # 5008, and Stop Lamp #7506.....

I have not done any measuring as yet......but I would like to know about the results of someone here......especially in the area of the bulbs that focus straight...or the ones with peripheral LEDs that are supposed to illuminate the tail light fixture better.....

Just interested in Tail and Stop at the moment.....thinking of ordering the red ones for that purpose.....

ooh, let me know what you find onthose, I need something a little better than plain bulbs for my brake lights and have looked into getting those LED brake lights before. All mine show up kind of dim through the (old) tinted taillights and rear window tint (35%). Makes me a little worried that someone might not see them at first glance.

Full illumination

The main issue with this replacement is that most of the LEDs available generate a round circle of light that projects onto the lens. The effect is a round illumination rather then a filling out of a red lens. The reflector at the base of the bulb has nothing to reflect. With some careful looking you can get an LED that has some radially mounted/ side firing LED's. This setup provides a better, brighter light. Make sure to buy the LED the same color as the lens (red stop, yellow corners). I have not used them for the turn signals, as I do not want to get into the signal not blinking problem. I think that has been covered elsewhere in this forum.
The UV bulbs might look better on cars from the 60's.

You could mount a small piece of smooth glass at the front of the bulb. This would reflect a small percentage of the light from the LEDs directly back onto the reflector, evening out the light spread.

thats why they offer the 45 degree and other such side and rear mounted led bulbs, specifically for brake and other reflector type applications.

Question Here's the question.....

In this first link you will see all of the Tail and Stop light bulb replacements....
http://www.superbrightleds.com/tail-brake-turn.html

the second item down, the 24 LED (R1156 R24), replaces #1156 Bulb in Tail and Stop Lamps, is one possibility....
http://www.superbrightleds.com/specs/1157-x24.htm

the third item down, the 30 LED (R1156 R30), replaces #1156 Bulb in Tail and Stop Lamps,is another possibility....
http://www.superbrightleds.com/specs/1156-x30.htm

the fourth item down, the 3watt Luxeon (R1156 RLX3), replaces #1156 Bulb in Tail and Stop Lamps, is yet another possibility....
http://www.superbrightleds.com/specs/115x-xLX3.htm

the sixth item down, the 9 and 15 LED (67 R9 & 67 R15), replaces a #67 Bulb, is also a possibility for Tail lights only
http://www.superbrightleds.com/specs/67.htm

It's in the mid 20*F outside.....so I have not done any measuring.....
I would like to know what you folks know or think about these possible choices.......

Thanx
SB

I bought mine

from autolunination (see first post), they were cheaper, especially shipping. Mine are doing fine so far. I guess its been about three weeks. In an effort to get them a little brighter I have bought the 4 LED version. I'll inform as to how that goes.
