I rarely ever click on links in emails that could potentially be fraudulent (phishing) unless I am 100% sure it is legit.

Emails from my banking company, PayPal, eBay and any Credit Card company I deal with are never, ever clicked on in an email.

Open up a new browser window and type the location (or click a bookmark) manually. People do some really tricky stuff to make you think the email is legit when in fact it is not.

Like leathmang said, you should always report phishing emails. GMail has a handy feature to do this:

If you're looking at an email, click on the "Show Options" link, then click on the "Report Phishing" button.

Exclamation The listings.....

The 43 listings of various DVD collections of TV series......were bogus.....

As you folks read all of the postings in this thread......everyone seems concerned about replying to unofficial messages......

I did not reply to any unofficial messages.......that was part of the problem.....I was locked out of my e-bay account......by e-Bay.....

I had to change the password on my e-mail account.....

then go to the "forgot password" page.....from e-Bay, log in page....

Change e-Bay password.....and receive an e-mail at my newly re-passworded e-mail server....

then go back into e-Bay using the new password......

then went to security chat....and discussed this with a person at e-Bay....

and then was phoned back by that person.....assuring me that e-Bay had a division that looks into this sort of scam.....I still don't understand what the point of this scam was......

Note: I could have gone directly to Help Chat from the e-Bay guest page....but I wanted SECURITY NOW..!!!!

When I asked how I became a victim of this scam....was asked about any "unofficial, official messages" and if I had replied to them.....which I had not.....then was asked about any other "odd" e-Bay happenings.....and I told them about the car that had been up then withdrawn, by e-Bay, for some sort of listing violation.....then put back up with virtually the same ad....

So....I then thought that if e-Bay was interested in these oddities, then perhaps some of y'all would be as well.....

I never, ever answered any sort of e-Mail sent from e-Bay......just did this thru e-bay Security......

e-Bay was aware, and had in fact flagged my account.....someone was using my "name/handle" to harass someone else......

all is well now.....

Run Adaware too. And Microsoft's Defender. If you're really confident in your computer skills I'd also recommend running Hijack This! to see what's latched itself onto Internet Explorer. After that, start using Firefox if you're not already. Then if you're still dissatisfied, switch to something other than Windows

Spybot will miss some things that Adaware will catch and both of them will miss things that Defender will catch, and vice versa.

Don't Respond to Phishing emails

Sometinmes when you respond to the links in these phony emails they have been known to insert malicious software into your computer, keystroke loggers or other viruses.

It's best to either forward them to spoof@ebay.com or spoof@paypal.com and immediately delete them.

Because computers are as complicated as they are people usually suspect complicated causes of problems. Usually problems are pretty simple when you get to the bottom of them. There is a real good chance that you gave your password to someone.

Spybot gives you much of the information that people here mentioned. It tells you all of the programs that load at startup, like key loggers. It gives you the BHOs (browser helper objects). Look in the advanced mode.

Run a firewall and spybot. Look at castlecops.com for more information on the hijackthis program.

When you are pretty sure that you have a grip on this, change your ebay password again and don't give it to anyone.

Be especially careful on public computers. The only time I had an experience like yours on eBay, it was after I logged-on at Kinkos.

Look for information on eBay about how to protect your account.

Good advice so far. It sounds like you're running Windows given the spyware issues. If so, and assuming you run WinXP, then once your system is clean, you should IMMEDIATELY create a limited user account. Just click on user accounts in the control panel, add a new account, and make it a limited account. Do not delete your old account.

Then, use the limted account for all surfing/email activities. You probably will only need to use the main account to install software.

The reason to do this is that any spyware that you may pick up while surfing will be unable to install itself because the limited account lacks the permissions necessary to do so. This simple step will make a bigger difference than anything else you can do to prevent spyware.

If you had a key logger, you need to immediately change all passwords. If you ever used a credit/bank card online, contact the provider right away, report the incident, and order a new card. May not be a bad idea to start watching your credit report too.

Finally, you can use a more secure browser. I personally use Mozilla Firefox, and recommend it. There are others as well. If you insist on IE, update to IE 7 if you havent all ready, it offers some phishing protection, and has corrected some of the more glaring security holes.

Nice world we live in eh?

Same Deal

Shorebilly,
I had the same exact thing happen to me about a month ago, right down to the same listings for DVDs. So I went thru the same password change procedure as you, only I didnt talk to anyone at Ebay. No helpful advice to offer, except echos of other posts. Sounds like you're already pretty well aware/protected with what you are running.
I'm just amazed that it's the identical scam...

Any insight as to the objective of the scam? Is there any potential benefit to the perpetrator? Or is it just a prank?
