99 E300TD died

My 99 E300TD suddenly lost power and then stalled, wouldn't restart until I let it sit for a 1/2 hour. It looks like there is fuel in all the fuel lines and no error codes. Happened again a few days later.

Any ideas of possible causes?

Very likely an o-ring failure. The first one that I would check is the o-ring under the prefilter. O-rings cracks that cause this can be almost invisible without magnification. Last year the o-ring on my shut off valve was leaking. I could not see the crack untill I stretched the o-ring.

If there is no air in the lines I would not suspect an o-ring failure but rather either a failing shutoff valve or K40 relay. Both are relatively inexpensive and easy to replace. The K40 is cheaper, so I would start there. Do a search here under K40 relay.

One other possibility is some water in the fuel which can cause the same symptoms.
That has shut my 210 down a few times at inopportune moments.

Fuel filters or water are a possibility. When I was having trouble with filters the car would lose power but never stalled and would restart immediately and drive off. His sounded like a sudden engine shutdown which is what lead me to recommend the shutoff valve or K40 but if the failure was preceeded by a loss of power and hesitation it could be the fuel filter...I would certainly try that anyway since it is only a $10-$15 replacement part for the main filter. Could even be ice in the fuel filter in this cold weather...though we don't know where he's at.

Once running, the IP is very efficient at removing air from the fuel system.

I would look at the shutoff valve and moreso the K40 relay as it seems to be an intermittant failure.

If not replaced previously, the K40 is overdue.

I agree about the K40. Hankg, read this thread and see if the symptoms sound familar.

Some will recall the long post regarding my '98 E300.

While I did indeed replace the pre-filter O ring and all the other lines the main culprit was the "hidden"O ring where the shut off switch fits into the block, that's also where the fuel was leaking from when cold.
