How to remove tumbler in 126 82 300SD?

I have searched, but cannot find any threads with ignition tumbler removal instructions. I just sprung for a VIN matching tumbler and spare keys from the dealer, I put the paper clip in, and tried to remove the tumbler, but there is a steel ring that holds it all in. the dealer quoted me 125.00 to install my tumbler... I am hoping there is a simple way to get the ring off.
thanks,
John

look at this thread Ignition Cylinder Lock Removal

Go to frame 4. There are some significant differences between 123 and 126 that was addressed early in the thread.

I had some good success with a jewelers screwdriver. You can get some lever action out of it and move the cam back in place relatively easily.

BTW, the collar will screw off in about five turns. I must have turned it about 15 times before realizing this.........

The best item for turning the collar is a set of 90 degree neddlenose pliers with some tape on the jaws to protect the collar.

thanks, there are several pictures that do not load... the ones that explain how to get the lock ring off is one of them. my current key is working fine though, so at least I don't have to use the sander...
I guess I will need someone to spell it out for me to remove the ring.
thanks again,
John

The ring simply unthreads.

But, it won't unthread if the locking cam is not moved inward. That's the purpose of the jewelers screwdriver. The cam will stop the ring on each revolution of the ring, so, be prepared to use the screwdriver to hold the cam as you turn the ring.

Read Frame #4
Put the hex key (or jewelers screwdriver) into slot at pos. #2 till you hear the crunch. Use the 90 D pliers (pictured) to remove the collar. Like BC said it only takes a few turns and it's off. The colar is made of very hard steel, not plastic don't be afraid of crushing it. The pcitures that are not showing are of a 123 cylinder, while close 126's are different.

I dealt with this awhile ago, and I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed. Here's my thread:Ignition Switch problem 1981 300 SD.

If you look about half way down post #28, you'll read where I realized the error of my ways

Unfortunatly I'm not as lucky. I'm about to order a new tumbler for my 300TD. I went to go get it last sunday to do some work on it and the key wouldn't turn. Its never even hinted at a problem before Hopefully the new key that comes with the tumbler will get it to turn so I can get it out.

you can try a pad sander without the sandpaper to vibrate the tumbler while you try to turn the key... good luck!

I got mine out!!! but Now I cannot get the tumbler surround to go back in properly... key won't turn. I guess I don't have the tumbler in correctly. I am putting painter's tape on and marking EXACTLY where the pointer needs to point to get the tumbler back in... wish me luck!
