Now that I reset my timing to 26*BTDC, it idles just as good as any other 617 I've seen. The flywheel weight is fine. Heavier flywheels mean smoother power pulses and slightly higher initial torque but more energy is used to accelerate the FW mass instead of the vehicle. 6lbs less mass in the flywheel is like shaving 120lbs from the car. |

My indie had a source and so I stopped by.
The problem is, what's the deal with the part number?? It shows up nowhere else. Is that the real deal? |

well, it doesn't even come up on the EPC. You sure you're reading the numbers as etched? Sometimes they can be funky and open to multiple interpretations.

well...not clear from where I'm sitting , but the last digit doesn't look like the 1 from the 617 portion 6170300005 comes up in the EPC on a partno search as Japan and Euro flywheel. That last 1 almost looks like a 5...the 2 looking like a zero on the other hand is more of a stretch. The big question here is will the person doing the install work with that flywheel or not?

I stopped by his place in Torrance but he's not there They returned a call on Tuesday but I haven't heard from them. Grrr. The descriptions match however, I am just concerned that it will function properly. I will try to take a better picture and email you. Even with all of the possible combinations does anything closely match numbers? I heard that all 032 numbers were piston ring related. |

It's verified, the installer is moving their shop after 25 years for unspecified reasons right near my workplace so that's the reason he didn't get back to me. He was enthusiastic just by the fact that I was able to obtain the flywheel at all.
So now it's a waiting game of 3-4 weeks until he moves and then another W115 240D 3.0 4 Speed will be on the road. |

the extra thick lip is to put as much mass as possible where it will have the most effect. at the edge of the wheel.
that looks to be the correct fw with the correct weight. did you check your other fw or flex plate for neutral balance? if it is neutral this one will need to be neutral too. sounds like you got lucky. the lighter fws will work no doubt but with a heavy dude like that, my 300d stick idled as smooth as if it were a six. none of the hop that you get with an automatic equipped 617! sweet! tom w

I didn't imagine how hard it would be to take a photo of a iron stamping. I think this one is clear enough. The texture causes blurriness apparently.
Tom, the two cars are still 100% intact and need to be driven to the shop so I will ask when the work is underway. I won't know if the pressure plate or the FW is neutrally balanced until then. I will find out since it all have to match otherwise the rig obviously won't hold up. Oh by the way you're right it was ~38 lbs. My scale is a bathroom scale so 37.5 lbs is probably not entirely accurate. I am curious to see how this compares to a 240FW converted car. This is all very promising, I hope it turns out well! |

looks like you are set up to do it all correctly.
the 240 fw weighs 28 #. be sure to mark both fw before taking them off. check the one off the engine you plan to use for balance, if it is neutral you are in good shape. but if it is the one going on must be neutral too. if it is not neutral they must be matched balanced according to the practice outlined in the FSM. good luck tom w
