Gonna do the full GreaseCar Conversion!

I talked for quite a while today on the phone with Steve Parker of Deep Fried Rides in Memphis and I'm going to go whole hog (pun intended) and get my 84 300 DT converted. He'll be installing the kit from greasecar.com on March 16&17. I have to go to a conference in Mississippi so I'm going to drive the car down and have him do his thing! After that, on to the MS Coast and back to North Virginia. Should be quite an adventure!

at least its a 2-tank system. Id suggest adding a vegtherm up front for quicker heating.

I don't think you're going to impress many folks on this forum with a "conversion." Why not brew your fuel and leave the car alone? Once you set up the system to filter used oil, it's really not that big a hassle to just process it into fuel. Just don't tell the wife what you're doing and everthing will be OK.

I'm not trying to impress anyone. It's something I think would be good to do. I don't have the room to brew my own fuel and will only be able to filter the oil in the spring/summer due to the setup having to be outside. My father was very much into alternative energy 35 years ago and it's rubbed off on me. I'm not a tree hugger, but if I can run the vehicle on alternative fuel, I will do so. Please pardon my excitement.

I think it's great that you're doing it and are excited about it. Too many folks have the NIBMB syndrome -- Not Invented By Mercedes-Benz.

my dad was very much into alternative energy as well before he passed away and it rubbed off on me. i knew i would convert a car the minute he started talking about it. he and i looked for a vw forever and could not find what he wanted. i found this mercedes, fell in love with it, and will convert it still. good luck on your conversion. dont mind people giving you grief. its your car, and i think its great your excited.

I applaud your efforts--I too am into Alt. Fuels. But chopping up a Benz to achieve that goal is viewed by most here like telling a bunch of architects how you're going to put a solar panel on top of Big Ben. I actually thought of doing the "conversion", but I quickly found after I bought my 85 300D that it's really a piece of remarkable engineering. Personally if I was to alter a diesel I wouldn't do a Benz. But all that being said, good luck and keep going green!

Actually the greasecar setup does not require any chopping up if done right. It can be removed without much effort either and the car can be restored to its original state if so desired.

That said, I've done it once and will not do it again since I don't drive enough to pay off the investment. Making your own biodiesel is probably the better route since initial investment costs will be well below a conversion route. Fuel costs will be higher, but economy will also be better due to the higher BTU's.

What needs to get hacked up? I've been running an 82 300d on a two tank system with a coolant heat exchanger for about two years, but I could unconvert in a couple hours, and except for an odd bolt hole here and there, you wouldn't be able to tell. Initially I used the veggietherm, but I like the heat exchanger better because it doesn't require a relay and a lot of current to make it work...and its big, gray, and spirally. If I lived anywhere cold, I might use both. Its still a marvelous piece of engineering. I say convert, but don't hack!
