Diff. Changes (w123)

So I was looking at this post

Tank Screen Removal - Pictorial

a few weeks ago and I noticed that in the first picture the diff. has inner CV's that are bolted in place with what looks like 6 bolts. My diff. is not like this and appears to have CV's that are held in place within the diff. by C clips?

My question to all those in the know on this forum, is what years/ models got this type of diff.?

I have been thinking about a limited slip for as long as I have had these cars and the diff. looks a lot like the 7in. unit that came in ford sierra 4x4 over in europe and I just happen to have one of those diffs. handy. So if I can get my hands on a diff. from a w123 that has bolt on CV's then I can start thinking about a cheap LSD.

Your differential is the same. What is different are the half shaft. One is Annular (which you have with no bolts) and the other is Homokinetic (which have the 6 bolts) They are interchangeable. It think they appeared in 1984 or 1985 model year.

See link for further discussion.

Annular -> Homokinetic Axles - are they interchangeable?

1980 W123 diff has bolts - 1981 diff no bolts

My 1980 300D had bolted on axles at the diff.
Caught me by suprise.

The 1981 300D that I swapped in had no bolts at the diff to hold the axles.

I always thought my 1980 was odd. Seemed to be a cutoff/transition year,
some parts 1979, some parts 1980.
