A Question about the control rod going to the transmission on my engine.

When it's freed from the linkage on the top of the valve cover, if I hold it in my hand at rest, would that be the same as it's "Idle" position? What's the length measurement for that rod and how is it measured?

I'm going to reset all my linkages to their factory lengths and start troubleshooting some shifting probs.
