Pop tester

Hello guys!! What's up lately?

I'm looking for some advice to build a pop tester. I've been studying about bosch injection pumps and mercedes injector. I've seen a couple of threads about building a homemade pop tester.

Can anyone give me some tips or advise about how to build one and the safety considerations related?

Thanks!!

I have one built from a grease gun.

Easy enough to build---grease gun, close nipple, tee (for guage), nipple, adapter to 1/2" n.p.t. coupling.

1/2" national pipe thread is not exactly a perfect match for the injector threads but will work with care and teflon tape. I have used this on Dodge and VW diesel injectors also.

Northern Tool has the gauges cheap enough.

For environmental & safety reasons I use vegetable oil instead of diesel fuel to get opening pressure readings. Vegetable oil doesn't work well to check spray patterns.

Be careful, a quality, simple grease gun can build up to 10,000 PSI pressure.

Yeah. I had simply typed "Pop tester" in the search function and about 50 hits appeared. I then copied and pasted the link thinking it would show up. Apparently not.

Type "Pop tester" in the search bar. There's a lot that's been written about it here on the forum.

Here's a list of all the parts I ordered for mine from mcmaster.com. It includes the more expensive max pressure needle gauge. All you need to add to this list to have a pop tester is a grease gun, grease extenstion hose and an old injector line

Ouch.. I priced out the McMaster parts list above, and was happy until I hit the gauge!

I think I'm going to be doing some scrounging for a gauge before I drop $83 for a bit of testing equipment I won't use all that often!
At that rate, I suspect I can pay a shop to do it for me a few times and still be ahead, as much as that offends my preferences toward doing the work myself!

Hey_Allen, believe me, I scrougned and scrounged for a max pressure gauge - none to be found except taht one. There is a suitable 1% accuracy gauge for $17 just above the one listed in the parts list on the same catalog page at mcmaster - it will work fine. But some guy on another post said the max pressure gauge is worth spending a little extra on. And since the injectors are suppsoed to be within 3 bar of each other, it seems a little difficult to get that (50PSI) without the max needle.

The local shop here charges $17.50 a nozzle to balance and check. The reason I didn't take it to them was I wasn't convinced they knew what they were doing really, and anyway, I guess I'm an inveterate DIYer.....
