Cold lower coolant hose! What do you think?
I have a 82 300 SD and just added the DG block heater (hose ) kit and after installing and bleeding noticed that my lower hose as it exits thermostat housing is cold??? It should at least be warm, yes? I went ahead and replaced thermostat . . .no change, though thermostat housing is hot and thermostat is properly installed arrow up, etc . . car does not overheat and has always been properly maintained by PO and myself so I doubt that radiator could be blocked. Any thoughts? Thanks all!

If the rad was blocked, it would over heat, I should think, Did you check with warm engine?

the lower hose will not get flow until 80*C.
up to 94*C, some of the coolant is returned to the waterpump. over 94*C, all flow goes thru radiator.

Don't forget,,, with the colder temps and the heater on, you maynot get much flow through the lower heater hose until the car has rin for awhile.
My 2¢

Thanks, I am feeling better . . .I shut the car down and then noticed that the outlet from the thermostate hosing was warm and lower hose so apparently, I have flow and a car that stays pretty cool. Thanks again!

Did you also notice that the upper hose was cold (or just slightly warm) at the same time you checked the lower hose?
The 617 doesn't generate enough heat at idle to open the thermostat when the temps are down in the '20s or less. |
