87 SDL Injector Line Leak

Hello Everybody,
On the SDL I got home tonight and slowed down to get into the driveway and noticed the faint smell of diesel and a bit of a vibration from the engine. I have now learned that the injector line at the IP is spouting fuel. It is coming from between the line and the threaded part that screws into the IP. I figure that it has probably just failed from old age (seems kind weird) but wanted to double check that I wasnt missing anything.

Also; I looked on the parts catalog and could not find the line listed. Does anybody know where I can get a new one? I do not think it will be fun putting a new one on so if anybody has any great ideas I am more than willing to listen.

Many Thanks,
Matt

Hi Matt, I'm sorry to hear about that.

Are you sure the line end didn't somehow shake loose?

Each line has its own part number. The first 4 are shared with the 601 and 602, the 5th is shared with the 602, the 6th is unique to the 603.

Replacing the line is no big deal. Releasing it from the clamps is a PITA. You can remove the front set of 3 separately from the rear set of 3. That's about the only shortcut I can think of.

speedy300Dturbo might have extra injector lines. I owe him a #4 injector line. I have one in okay condition but I want to get him one that's as nice as the one he lent me. If you need a #4, I have one for you.

Matt,

I had the same failure on my 300D 2 years ago. Somehow it cracked at the base of the line, right where the nut tightens it to the IP. You could order it from the dealer. I got mine for about $50.

You probably want to try right here at FASTLANE. When mine failed Phil's price was 1/2 of what the dealer wanted with shipping in. .....and it came from MB anyways

It's a common problem.

#6 failed on the '86 during my last trip to Raleigh. Cracked right through the tube and I lost the cylinder completely for the last 150 miles.

After installing the new tube, the cylinder had a decent amount of injector knock, which subsequently cleared itself after about 500 miles. So, don't be overly concerned if it happens to you. With mine, it may have been related to driving it nearly 200 miles on 5 cylinders.

Just to make you fellows feel bad..........I still managed 24.6 mpg on the tank with all the fuel for #6 flowing out onto the pavement.:thumbup1:

I have five good used ones if they can help... No 4 is wasted.

I'm assuming that the one that is bad is the 5th one; it is the fifth from the front. I tried to loosen the nut and re tighten it and it made no difference. I guess I will give Phill a call and see how much he wants for a new line.

Thanks Everybody!

It's an easy fix but here is a couple of helpful DIY tips.
1. Order the injection line clips cause the 20+ year old plastic is not going to survive the removal and/or re-installation. You have to have them.
2. You can install without removing intake Xover. Just remember how you twisted it to get it out - repeat to get back in. Reminded me of those bar room games with the nails that you had to un hook.:P

Ahem! Those clips are not 20 years old :D

The back 3 are easier to remove than the front 3 so that's a minor plus.
