The V10 TDI in the Touareg has 310hp i believe and over 550 ft lbs of torque! I wonder why VW doesn't offer the inline 5 TDI in the Touareg. it's the most popular engine for the T-reg over in Europe! The V10 is a 5 liter, with 2 Engine control units.

there's also a V6 TDI that would be quite nice.

The V8 TDI was featured in an A8 platform Jeremy drove on TopGear which achieved 40mpg. I presume that is in imperial gallons. It is still remarkable for a full size sedan.

Barry, it seems like you desire a Smart diesel or something ultra compact to get the weight down.

Does anyone know offhand what the rules are for diesels in CA or in New England/NY? Is there an outright ban? After a certain year? Thanks.

... because if they offered the I-5 Tdi Touareg here, guys like you and I would buy them, and get respectable mileage.

But I'm not interested in getting gas-engine mileage in a V10 Touareg. The Japanese are doing better in SUV mileage than that. My Land Rover does nearly 20 hwy with a gas V8. Damn marketing people.

If CA is still the way it was about 2 years ago, you obviously cannot buy one new (you haven't been able to for at least 3 years), but you can bring one in from another state if it has more than 7,000 miles on it.

7500 miles to be exact. If you want a new one have a family member buy it and break it in or drive it to CA and then transfer it when it hits 7500mi.

No ban. Just very difficult (and expensive) to produce engines that meet the obscenely strict emissions requirements placed on diesels.

Not cost effective to develop engines just to meet emissions in such a (relatively) small market share.

Or just do what I always did and register your cars in another state where you have family. Oregon is the best. It used to be $32 for 2 years registration, flat-fee for any vehicle and you were done.

Yes, we desire cars that the economic equation works extremely well for us. Fun to drive is a bonus as well. Smart mercedes new diesels would be wrong for our image though and an extreme economic waste as well.
I have to wonder how many site members are aware that a three year old volkswagon tdi diesel can recover most if not all it's initial cost if brought right new. I do not see this changing until about 2010 if then.
Other than this normally buying new cars is extremely wasteful. It makes a lot more sense with a little skill to aquire a really good car about five years old and spend the difference on something really worthwhile like a grandchilds education for example.
The wife and myself evolved from working class families. We try to maintain the values and lifestyle that go along with it. We have felt to forget them would socially isolate us to some extent too. Or even worse lead to some form of disfunction in the family.
I have decided to use the 79 240d as our local driver for this spring/summer/fall. The high tech stuff just backs it up for winter driving and the situations that do arrise where we just have to use new cars. If an occasional new car keeps the wife happy it just makes good common sense too.. Sometimes I am even allowed to sit in them.
