Does anyone know a source for new OM642 crate motors. or the Sprinter van version motor..

MB will sell crate engines, maybe Dodge. Freightliner doesn't really sell many parts for Sprinters.

Thinking of a (very expensive) project or did one already go bad?

There have been a few on Ebay from wrecked Sprinters.

OM642 is the 3.0L V6, btw.


The OM612 is the 2.7L I-5 and OM613 the 3.2L I-6.

No doubt. I like the ease and simplicity of an old OM617 or OM616. I can't afford the tools to work on of these newer jewels.

I like technically complex stuff, and have seen one of those under the cover, definatley complex....but I'd still be ok with it. Most of my drool was from the power/efficiency its capable of. In the end though, I am still all for the 617.

So what kind of power,and efficiency are they capable of ?
Would one fit in 300CD, and is it worth it..?

I do as well. But not in something that takes me to work and back, and has so many confounded variables constantly running parity checks against one another on a car supporting 100's of different subsystems (keep it one-box...PLEASE?).

One can fix a broken wire by clipping, stripping, twisting and taping. Not so on aged exposed microchips which are also unique to a particular application.

I don't think I have ever heard of a fuel-efficient Mercedes Diesel engine of any sort.... Maybe the newer DI engines could be if they didn't have so much damn emissions crap on them.. but they do. And then there's the problem with what if something goes wrong with it? You can't do nothin bout it unless you can talk to the computer... I did, however, run across a new-technology diesel today that didn't seem so bad.. check out a Kubota V3800DIT... Efficient, clean, about the same size as a Cummins 4BT and just about perfect, near as I can tell, for a Jeep!!!

I had a Kubota D905 (0.9L 3cyl, 13hp) That I was going to put in a metro. It had a cracked head so I got rid of it before I started to sink any money into it. Not bad though, I got it for free and sold it for $150 to a waste management guy that was going to use it for parts on a pumper.

There are lots of 3000lb+ auto-tranny 190Ds running around at about 40 mpg, getting close to the mileage of 1st generation Tdi cars with 5-speeds and much less weight, the 602 and newer engines are efficient, just that most Mercedes cars are heavy luxury cars with automatic transmissions.

They don't do bad in class 7 and class 8 truck designs either, etc., etc. They make a lot of very efficient engines it is just up to US marketing folks as to which versions are imported for US market cars. Look at the Touareg diesel fuel mileage for example, doesn't mean that VW doesn't make efficient diesels.
