Piezoelectric injector conversion for older diesels
Has anyone heard any talk about a conversion to adapt the newer technology injector systems to older diesels? After seeing the new FEDEX vans Im hooked.I can only imagine what a improvement it would be on my 300 SDL.

Possible. However, you would have to be a math/computer genius and it would be more than a few thousand $ in development.
In the end, it would probably be cheaper to buy a 2007 ML320 CDI. Last edited by ForcedInduction; 01-27-2007 at 04:26 AM. |

Computers, Bah Humbug.......
Why would you want to add a computer to a perfectly good automobile???

LOL! Ain't that the truth! An easier way to get the same thing is buy a wrecked sprinter/ML/etc. and swap the engine/tranny/computer into your car. You'd be in for a long tough time getting the wiring harness figured out but I think the results would be worth it. This stuff is done all the time by custom shops and knowledgeable individuals. RT

Perhaps the Easter Bunny or Santa Claus knows how to do this.

Santa should know all about this sort of thing. After all, he brings me some fossil fuel every year!

You might need to break open a rather large piggy bank.

They're perfectly fine just the way they are.
I can net 30 mpg in winter, idle as well as a gasoline version, and they're actually QUIETER than the CDI engines MB has been putting out (which sound like small trucks without their sound insulation). If you want power, you know where to look. Simplicity, biofuel ready, excellent performance potential, great fuel economy, classic looks, safest cars in the world, unparalleled build quality. These outstanding features are common to all 617/603 engined variants. Why do you need anything else? |

The only real advantage would be infinite control over injection operation.

Yeah buy a 2003-04 CDI with the I6, its pretty much an updated 603/606 bottom end with a different head. Looks like it even uses the same water pump.

http://www.drivven.com/StandAloneDriverSystems.htm $10k for the "stand alone controller" $5-??k for all their "sensors" $$$$ for designing your own controller to read all their sensor data and tell the "stand alone controller" what to do with the injectors (Torque control, boost adjustment, smoke limit, egt limit, timing, etc, etc). To top it all off National Instruments (they are just re-using NI's hardware) is SUPER SUPER proprietary. Not only does it cost thousands of dollars to get a license, but there is nothing even close to similar out there. So if NI ever went out of business your completely SOL as you'd have to start from scratch if there was that "new feature" you wanted to add that wasn't supported. That stuff is great for people with research grants though. And people who need computers to do stuff, without caring how the computer does stuff. Its just a very very niche market (well, for their price tag at least).

Hmm... I wonder how different the heads are? And how similar in price one of those is compared to a new #22 head. Would be an interesting choice if I had an OM603 with bad head.
