Testing Vacuum

Can anyone tell me where I can find what my values should be for testing the tranny vacuum on a 1982 300sd?

The absolute value is not all that important. One vehicle may be perfectly fine with 14" and another vehicle will prefer 9". It all depends on the age of the transmission and the quality of the shift.

Connect a Mityvac to the line that feeds the vacuum control valve. Connect it before the T so vacuum goes into the VCV and down to the transmission.

Pump it up with the rack closed and read the gauge. Then with the Mityvac pumped up, open the rack and watch the gauge. It should fall progressively toward zero as the rack is opened.........finally reaching zero when the rack is at the maximum fuel position.

Report back with results.
