I agree. Talk them down all you want, Pick the car apart, But fabricating problems is trouble. Would you want someone lying and taking advantage of your parents or grandparents like that? Do what you want, just my .02 worth

I agree, bargain down but don't fabricate. It doesn't sound like you need to do much bargaining starting at $700, not much room to go down!

Agreed, dudes! Wasn't my idea to try and pull a fast one--someone else suggested making up that the transmission is failed by association. I just want a fair price. They are only asking $1200 to begin with, and acknowlege an engine swap/rebuild. I'm an honest negotiator.

I wasn't suggesting fabricating a problem. Simply stating that there's a probability of it having failed, and may need work as well. Any idea of what happens to the remainder of the driveline when an engine locks up ? The amount of stress put on the tranny, driveshaft, and rear end is not just a little jolt, and can be devastating to all of them. Ever see a driveshaft twist right off, or an input shaft on a tranny break ? You could drive around for months with a broken input shaft, or output shaft on a trans. I did it in my Chevy wrecker, and when it finally went totally, the tranny guy told me it was a very old break, and had been hanging on for a while. When an engine is stopped dead in it's tracks like that it CAN,and most of the time WILL take out other components with it. I'll bet two months from now if he puts a motor in the car today, he'll be looking for a trans here for sale on this site.

Swapping a motor in one of these is very time consuming. I know people on here always talk about how easy it is to work on these cars but let me tell you first hand that this is a big job ! I'm sure the secound time aroun (knock on wood here) it wouldnt take as long but I have to say this was a lot more work than I tought.
I could have replaced the motor in at least 4 civics for the time I have in my engine swap. But of course I have lots of experience with thes hondas and they truly are very easy cars to work on. I cannot imagine how bad it would be doing this in a rusty Canadian car. Do you own a torch set ? I'n not joking, do you own one ?

I have seen my share of locked up MB diesel motors in the last twenty or so years, and there has never been any drivetrain damage to any of them. With a automatic it's pretty hard to twist a driveshaft, or break the input shaft. |
