OIL is Cheap

IF I had a 320 CDI ,The first oil change would be at 100 miles, then at 500 miles.
then 5,000 miles ever after.
Unless I got a base "Reading" with an analysis @ 5k that looked superior.

Ditto. Break-in oil contains LOTS of little metal bits from all the parts seating. Bet thing is to get it out ASAP.

That's what the oil filter is for. Generally car manufacturers don't recommend very early oil changes for break-in. I'm not sure why but I think it's just a waste of oil and it may in fact cause more harm than good. I say let the engine mostly break in (3000-5000 miles), then change the oil and filter, unless otherwise recommended.

for sure! especially the synthetic oils. they are SO lubricitive (??) that if you were to change the oils, you would actually hurt the needed break in. Now on a freshly rebuilt engine that uses tons of gooie pastes and greases and sealants etc... the motor should be started, idled for about 20 to 30 minutes, shut down, and the oil drained and new filter and refilled with dino multi weight oil and run for 100 miles and drained, then some good stuff oil and filter for the standard break-in period.
I believe the factory uses the correct gaskets, and assembles the internals with multi bit torque tools, to limit the gook in the motor, and the test procedures flow out the leftover particulates, so the motor is ready for the approved break in procedure.

Silicone is the measure of contaminants withing the oil, due to contaminated airflow.

The cylinder liners in all Mercedes diesels to present are cast-iron.

Though I agree. I don't think its out of reason to go 10 - 13K miles between oil changes, so long as you are using the best rated diesel synthetic money can buy. Otherwise, about 5 - 7K miles is OK for diesels. And 2500 - 3000 miles on the regular stuff.

I don't remember the thread but I seem to remember that there is a special break in additive in the oil and that Mercedes recommends you run the car until the change interval is reached. You guys are treating these cars like the 3 cylinder diesel farm tractor my grandpa broke in when I was a youngun. Which is still my favorite diesel of all time and I was so sad when it burned up while the block heater was pluggedup.
