Rear Wheel Bearing

I need to replace a rear wheel bearing and was wondering if anyone knows what is involved in the job. I searched the forum and also just read today's post by Darkman regarding rear wheel bearings . I was out driving on the highway today and felt a few random clunks in the rear end, by the time I got 3 km's and got off the highway the sound was an unbearable squealing, screecking and growling...got a tow home and took the tire off...definately a wheel bearing, with the driveshaft removed the hub grinds and gets loose then tight while turning, also wiggles. I plan on getting the special tool but is there anything else involved that may be too much for a DIY repair?

thanks

I assume its the 240 d in your profile? if you put it in your sig line, makes it easier for the rest of us.

Did you pull the hub and look at the parking brakes?

also needed is a dial gauge and base, as well as a slide hammer with a hub attachment, rent from autozone, free.

a FSM(factory service manual) would help greatly. I dont think i'd do it without one.

What exactly is a dial guage and base and a slide hammer and hub attachment and what do they do. I assume the slide hammer is to remove the bearings? Is it posssible to just apply heat and a bit of force?

Just making sure the tow truck operator didn't let the rears on the ground since that is a sure good way to destroy the transmission.. carry on

I may be able to send a few pages on this as well.

the slide hammer is to pull the hub from the trailing arm. I am sure that there are other ways to do it, but the tool rental is free.

I did purchase 3 tools for this job. the special socket, to remove the nut available herefor $50. was $27,shipped last spring???

and a dial gauge, here, and holder, here. another $35.

then I also had to fab up a widget to pull it all together for assembly. 1/2 all thread and some washers and doo-hickeys that were lying around.
