not a problem here in the deep south. I use this car for running back and forth to St Petersburg 2-3 times a month.

Mine had no thermostat when I got it. Ran way too hot. If I did anywhere close to 85mph it would get up to 110C. I put a thermostat in and now it never goes above 85C.

To get the air out I just filled up the coolant, and then let the car run with the radiator cap slightly loose. Drove it around the neighborhood a few times until the thermostat opened, and then filled the coolant reserve back up. Drove it some more and I was done.

Did that about 6 months ago and haven't had a problem with it since.

still hot.....100+. yes it was hot, I could smell it, but no boil over. any more ideas?
What brand of thermostat? I tried a 75c Wahler thermostat (intended for a 77 450SL). This particular t'stat has a "jiggle valve" on the perimiter. Worked GREAT!! Took about 10 degrees c off the running temperature. No noticable difference in drivability, smoke, or cabin heat.

Edit: The gasket with the above described t'stat is an o-ring, which will not work on the 616 / 617. You need the proper gasket for 616 / 617 thermostat. Fastlane has both items.

Hmmm. What does it temp does it run at now? If its right above 80C, I'm definitely getting one.

Aren't the 616/7 thermostats bypass thermostats which allow the circulating water to bypass the block while cold and operate to force the coolant thru the block when warm? This explains why the engine runs hotter without a thermostat installed. There's nothing to force the full flow of the coolant thru the block.

NO bubbles, the hose does seem soft to me when cold this morning.I'll get another and put on to see if there is any change.

It seems like that would be the case because of the bypass featuer, but before this thread the only other incident of a car running hotter with no t-stat was on whunter's sd. It overheated with no stat but ran fine with one. All the other threads I've read on overheating (and believe me, I've read a ton) have cars that run cooler with no stat, like both of mine did.

still running at 100+ checked bottom hose when hot and it is not collapsing.....I'm gonna take the tstat out and see what happens.
I also noticed the resovior is only luke warm, but line is open as I did use the resovior to fill most of the radiator, before pouring coolant in the top hose.
