K & N is just another filter. I know, I've read all kinds of posts on here about shortening engine life, etc. After reading the references, I realize that nearly all of them were very unscientific in their testing and left everything to speculation. I've seen "tests" that show more filtration and I've seen "tests" that show less filtration. No testing was done with less/more oil, less/more air flow, calibrated particles or any semblance of common measurement.
However, I will say that just swapping out an air filter to get more airflow is mostly advertising, as with most of the "air kits" I've seen. If you want to use one, use it and be happy with your decision. Just don't expect some kind of miracle increase in horsepower. And on the flip side of that, don't expect some kind of drastic reduction in your engine life. I really don't see any logical reasoning in throwing away a perfectly good air filter just because someone jumps up and down and says you will destroy your engine.
