Anybody notice the K&N banner ad at the bottom?

anybody here endorse them for use with diesels? I understood they let too much dirt through for use with a diesel...

Lots of people like 'em, and it is possible that you will too. Personally, I've never been able to find filtration efficiency numbers so I don't trust them to remove the dirt that the OEM filter will.

If you're looking for more airflow and filtration efficiency isn't important, remove the filter entirely.

I doubt that there will be any power improvement with a lower-restriction filter in a stock turbodiesel, you are limited by the wastegate not the air filter, don't know what year/model you car is though or if it's a turbo.

I hear they collect more dirt than a OEM filter. I didn't know this about 2 years ago and bought a K&N for my TDI, then after lots of discussion about it on the TDI forums, I took it out and threw it in the garbage.

I know lots of people poo-poo them. Several years ago I had a '79 F100 w/a 302 that I put a K&N on and there was a notable performance gain. But that was strictly a street truck used in suburbia so dust was never really a big concern for me. I've never used one on any of my newer vehicles because I guess there's just enough of a question about them in my head.

I don't think I'll be adding one to my TD anytime soon. It'd be like blood-doping a donkey for the Kentucky Derby.

Try driving your car with the stock filter, then remove the stock filter and drive the car with no filter. See if your 0-60 times drop.
I doubt you will see much change.

I had a K&N on my 409d for a while. It was too noisy.

I work on alot of Dodge-Cummins powered pickups and EVERY one that had a K&N, I would find fine oily grit at the turbo inlet. I DON'T run one in my truck!!
I usually go one step further in that when I install an air filter, I put a thin film of light grease on the rubber seals.

Ladies and gentlemen, do not do what this man has suggested.

just my 2 cents, i installed a cone air filter on my 300SD, however it is not a k&n it is some other brand with more of a filter media to it. while i dont notice any power gains " and i have no wishfull thinking", i do find that the turbo spools up faster and it sounds damn good!!!!!!!!!!

Tried it, didn't like it.

I had a K&N in my Olds gasser for several years. It got oil all over the oxygen sensor (or whatever it is) in the air intake. I noticed no difference in performance or fuel economy and went back to the stock air filter.

I'd switch back to the OEM setup soon. You're drawing in hot underhood air, I doubt that's good for the engine. I'd rather have longetivity than the ability to hear a turbo spool up. Your turbo is not spooling up any faster either, it's just loud now without the OEM setup and sounds like it's going faster. If it were spooling up faster there would be a noticable power gain, which you claim not to have.

AND, for those who switch to these "cold air/high performance intake kits" because they're tired of replacing broken air cleaner brackets every few years, here's the fix that will stop that.

GM recently issued a technical service bulliten, that warns against the use of oiled filters, and states that warranty claims on MAF sensors won't be honored if one is present.

Ah, yes, that's what got all oiled up in my Oldsmobile after 30,000 miles of K&N. Don't remember whether my mechanic replaced it or whether it was cleanable. I'll bet he replaced it for safety's sake.

Don't waste the money. There will be no performance difference.
