Buzzer somewhere in the console...
Hey all, newbie here, be gentle.
I searched for this, but couldn't find anything on it. My '81 240D has on occasion (3-4 times in the past two years) emitted a very annoying buzzing sound from the console. It lasted for a coupla days at the most, but I never found out what it was for. I'm sure it's connected to the flasher, because when I would turn on the flashers or the turn signals, it would stop until I turned them off, but was unaffected by anything else. . I don't think I'll have that problem anymore, because it started sounding awful sick and croaked out yesterday. I've never found out what it could be an indicator for. Anyone have an idea what it is? Do your flashers and/or turn signals still work? The flasher relay is located in the center console, just in front of the shift lever. They tend to make buzzing sounds when they are dying.

Everything works fine on it. Even after it had stopped making the sound, they were still working fine. This was a pretty loud and steady sound, loud enough to hear over the radio, so I would definitely think it was a buzzer of some sort.

Let me ask you a question--
Do you sit your drink on the console between the gear selector and the flasher relay? It's a bit like a table, but you shouldn't do that. I sat mine there once and the cup sweat caused my relay to do exactly what you're talking about. When I'd use my blinker or 4-way flasher, it would stop. Just don't sit your cup there anymore If it's just plain going out-- get one at the boneyard, they're $93.00 from Performance Products!!!!

I don't generally set a drink there, but I did notice that the first time it did it was after I left the windows open during a pretty nasty rain shower, but after that, it was really not as a result of anything that I could tell.

I like the spilled drink theory. That relay is pretty load when it buzzes. The same relay is associated with both the 4-way flashers and the turn signals. The buzzer relay (seat-belt, lights, door) is located to the left of the steering column, not in the console. I would leave it alone if it has "fixed" itself. The replacement relay is about $50, as I recall.

Maybe some moisture got into the flasher switch and it took a while to dry out?

I kinda like the thought of that... If a problem shows up, then I'll worry more about it. Thanks a bunch.
