Usually the fastest and easiest way to improve the time in these cars is to go to your local military base and ask them for a JATO bottle. Stick it in your trunk(business end aft), tie it down, fasten your seat belt, and hold on. Times to 60 should be in the range of about 1-2 seconds. Top end? Well, you really don't want to know.

I'm so sad....

Hi guys,

I had the banjo bolts checked but it is still clean, the lines changed just to be sure, and installed a new bowden cable. While doing the road test, mechanic adjusted alda, bowden cable to achieve power. After 3 runs, without much difference, he checked on the turbo assembly and found out that it has a missing propeller. After a year of using the car mostly on city driving with stop and go traffic, it is only now that I focused on solving it's sluggishness. I spent $20 dollars for the labor and I somehow noticed a significant improvement in my shifting. But the sluggishness issue still remains. I hope to find a donor turbo assembly so I can get the propeller and transfer if to I've got right now. Mechanic told me it a non-working turbo assembly would be hard to find and and a good surplus is expensive here in my country.

Thanks for all your inputs. You guys are great!

Item from the link above states:

APPLICATIONS
84-89 Mercedes 300D, SDT, TD 3.0L
79-83 Mercedes 300 SDL 3.0L (california models)

I believe that is not the same as what is with my 1982 300SD.

You might want to check with Phil at above buy parts to find out any model #'s that will fit. Or **************.com or a pick'n'pull, if there is one nearby. As stated, turbos don't usually have problems. Good luck.

It is the correct turbo, the seller has got no clue what the turbo goes to.

There is no such thing as a 79-83 300SDL.

82300SD,
Where are you located?
If you are in the Balt-DC area, there is a chain of U Pull It salvage yards called Crazy Ray's. They have an online price list, Turbos, with core cost $50, plus $1 for yard admission. Bring your own tools.

Hi,
IF your Bowden cable is broken (transmission shift cable that goes to the throttle linkage- it's by a black box on your valve cover) You will NOT Be able to get up to speed any time soon. As another guy mentioned your transmission will shift very conservatively and your car will go SLOW. The turbo doesn't work until you hit around 2500 RPM's. So if your trans is shifting right away into 1234 very quickly your turbo may not have a chance to kick in. So...

1. Fix that cable and make sure it is pulling the linkage it's connected to flat against what it's up against. (or look at the manual for adjust spec). I just pull my cable till the linkage is flat against it's seat and it works fine.

2. Check the ALDA as other guys said and perform any other routine maintanence.

A word on your turbo... when you rev your engine you should hit a point where it's like a jet taking off. This is your turbo. If not you may have a problem. The way to check if your turbo is locked up is to take off the air box and the little U shaped plastic connector going to the turbo and reach in (when not running of course unless you want a quick nail and finger trim but try to spin that thing with your fingers. IT should spin free. If not somethings froze up.

Hope that helps.

#1 if your trans throttle pos sensor is not actuated (broken bowden cable) your speed is hosed. Fix that right away if you want to drive faster.

Ok... sorry I didn't see the later posts. My bad on that. Anyways, you've obviously fixed everything else. Have fun changing your turbo. You'll get it fixed don't worry.

Do you mean that the entire propeller is missing? as in someone removed it? I'm asking because it is very rare for the propeller to break - in fact I do recall hearing of that failure previously. And if someone were going to remove the part, I would have expected them to take out the entire turbo and not replace it.

As I read this thread, I was beginning to suspect that your wastegate was stuck open, which would prevent you from building any boost. This is a far more common situation than what you described.

Assuming, you really do need a new turbo, definitely check ebay. Your engine should be able to accommodate the turbo from a 1978-1985 300SD, or at 1982-1985 300D or 300CD, and the 300TD up until 1985 - I think they got turbos in 1981.

Good luck.

That cable controls your shift points. You could run the tranny manualy and see were you come in at?

That's what my mechanic also said that's why he assumed it is working at first. But they already encountered a couple of instance where the propeller got noisy. They replaced the whole assembly.

If you are sure that it is the righ one for me. I'm gonna put it on my watch list or could it be the wrong picture?

Thanks for the compliment. She's my daily drive. Planning to take her on a long drive soon that's why I'm trying to improve on the performance and running condition. That brought me to finding out about the broken turbo. I am also looking forward to having her fixed as parts become available and if my budget permits.

Theory is they just removed the propeller when it bacame noisy. The PO was not able to find a replacement and left it just like that because the car/engine won't run if you remove it.

Thanks for the info. Well taken!

How do I know if the mechanic have adjusted the ALDA correctly? Do you just feel it or is it measurable in any terms?

Why don't you have someone here yank a good turbo from a salvage yard and ship it to you? UPS/DHL delivers to your country I am sure, and you can pay via paypal.

Shipping will probably be $100-$150 US but maybe they will cut you a deal on the turbo.
