Source for Replacement Caliper Pistons?
 

Y'all,

I almost got finished with the near-complete rebuild of my '84 300td brake system last night, but the RF caliper foiled my plans. :(

Both inner and outer pistons were stuck pretty hard and required dozens of alternating jab-the-brake-then-uncock-the-piston cycles. To uncock the piston, I used a BFS and/or a brass drift. When I finally got the pistons out, I discovered that they were evidently made of a material softer than brass and thus the drift had done enough damage to render them unusable. :mad:

I know that many of Y'all don't believe in rebuilding calipers, for whatever reason. That's fine by me, but I've always had success with it and since I already have the rebuild kit and have the desire to conquer this caliper, I want to find replacement pistons. I can find them for umpteen other Bendix calipers, but not this one, which is marked:


Anyone know where I can find these things besides a junkyard? "In a new or rebuilt caliper..." is not the answer I'm looking for. ;)

Where do you get your caliper rebuold kits from?

Well, I priced the cheapest pair of pistons at $80, so the $65 quote I got from a rebuilt leads me to concede this time...

Phil & Roy have 'em at Fastlane, but I bought them from one of my BMW parts suppliers while I was already getting some other parts for my 535i. Pricing was about the same.

Thanks, but I already gave up yesterday afternoon and acquired the rebuilt caliper locally.

There is a wrench made specifically for gripping the inside of the piston and safely removing them. However, any piston that is THAT stuck, is probably too rusted and pitted to be returned to service.
Best idea is to do what you already did.
