Replaced IP, this forum rocks!

Howdy Gang,
i finally finished replaced my IP this last weekend and the beast is back on the road! This forum is great I've learned so much more about our 300D and more importantly built up loads of confidence in my ability to work on it.
As it turned out, timing the IP was the easiest part of whole deal, took all of 10 minutes and only 10 minutes cuz i went back to recheck the timing thinking it couldn't be that simple.
I used the blow threw the tube bubble method outlined here on the forum, stuck a plastic tube in the input to the IP, set engine to 24* BTDC, jammed a screwdriver in the throttle linkage to full throttle, removed the valve and spring from the #1 element, replaced the element (without valve/spring), spread some spit on the #1 element, then adjusted the IP while blowing threw the tube and watching the element for a bubble to form in the spit. thats it for the timing.
The hardest part is having to drain the oil and remove the oil filter housing so there is room to pull the IP out and get to the one bolt at the back of the IP. The bolts on the oil filter housing are a pain, but i needed to replace the gasket on the oil filter housing anyway, doesn't leak any more. I wouldn't wish this job on anyone but all in all it wasn't that difficult just took allot of time to remove and reinstall everything.
Hey i was also motivated to replace the speedometer cable while i was under the car, hasn't been working for over a year!
And thank you JimmyL for hooking me up with the extra IP he had for sale, works perfectly.

Thanks again to all who contribute to this Forum
Burkster

I don't know how I missed this thread last week. Yall have no idea how much it warms my heart to know that a piece of "The Flash" is still out there providing fuel to a non-smoking diesel engine.
Dang I loved that old wagon........
I'm glad Burkster got his going.

Yes Jim, and the bonus being. You know for certain you did not substitute a bad pump with a bad pump. It was probably not a valid thought but this certainly eliminates it as an outside possibility. I wish we had lived closer together and had a go at old smokey together when you owned it.
I always have loved a challenge. The tougher the better. We might have mastered it together. One of those questions that the answer might never be known.
It is always warming to know a part goes on in service as well from an old favorite. Notice there are few smoker threads reciently? They will be back I think with so many 123s out there still. I will watch for your posts then.

No need to drain the oil.
