TURBO Transplant?

Is it possible to take the Turbo from a '84 300SD W126, and install it on a '80 300D W123?

Swap manifolds aswell?

The reason is we got our hands on a '84 SD with a strong engine but the car is too far gone. Interested in adding some power to the 300D.

Thoughts?

You cannot add a turbo to an originally non-turbo engine, it will destroy it as it was not designed to withstand the added power given by a turbo. The turbo engines have multiple enhancements to withstand the added power. You'd have to swap the whole engine. (which is doable)

What about the tranny? The 123's tranny is better, think there would be any problem using the 300d's tranny w/ the 300SD's engine?

Not totally sure , but I would think the gearing is quite different between the two. I know from when I did my swap, the na240D tranny is way smaller than the 300DT tranny.

What are your problems with the 300SD tranny? Could be an easy fix.

Ha. I tried to get one for my swap but I couldn't locate a donor quick enough. Maybe down the road.

Not really sure yet. Just picked it up today, had to jiggle the selector around to get it to go into R or P, otherwise it shifts nicely(tons of power!). The whole selector was bent 90deg foward(bent it back). Havn't had time to diagnose.

I do know the fluid was clean and at a good level.

Havn't checked vac lines yet (other than bypassing EGR).

Sounds like shifter linkage bushings. They are about 75 cents and 20 minutes installed.

75 cents sounds good to me! I'll have to check into that.

The tranny in a 300sd and 300d are identical except for the way they output the speed to the speedometer in the dash, the 300d has a mechanical gear + cable, and the 300sd has an electronic pickup.

The tail housings can be swapped to give you the correct speedo drive.
